Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

Let's imagine a very unlikely situation in which the big two brands, Fender and Gibson start marking up the prices while not improving quality which means you get less for your money.

Now, if you still have GAS for a Les Paul, Strat, Tele, SG, Jazzmaster, Flying V or any of their famous models... if you still want the tone, vibe and more or less the looks of these models - what alternative would you choose? or might have already chosen?

Re: Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

as far as gibson-esque stuff, im very impressed with edwards

Re: Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

For a Fender alternative, I'd go for a Suhr strat like model.
For Gibson, the choice is easy, ESP Edwards.

Re: Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

Strat or Tele I'd go G&L
Here some I've owned and loved

The tribute line are great guitars too.

If I were going for LP's or SG's... then Tokai, Orville or Jap Epiphone is what I'd be looking for although the Edwards guitars look great too.

Re: Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

My choices would be:

Tokai LC95S:

Tokai LS100Q:

And for my main GAS - a Tele I'll probably have to go with Warmoth or some other custom parts supplier... nobody (including Fender) offers models that depart from the white/natural/vintage sunburst concept.

Really liked the green Edwards Tele someone posted here a short while ago.

Re: Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

Ignoring the Les Paul replica crowd, I'd go for Dean Caddy's and ESP/LTD EC-1000's. Those would get me by just fine.

But there is still Greco, Edwards, Agile, Tokai, Epiphone, and Orville to get me through if I need a real Les Paul.

Now that you mention it...doesn;t appear that I need Gibson at all anymore.

Re: Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

Most of my answers would be Warmoth.
Nothing like a guitar built to your very own specs.

Then, let's go one step futher, and say Epiphone & Squire is no longer being made, then . . .

. . . off the shelf, Schecter's PT series for a Tele replacement looks good.

There is also G&L for most of your Fender Tele & Strat needs.
Gretsch & Electromatic's for Les Paul alternatives.
Peavey for Tele replacements.
PRS for Les Pauls.
Schecter Corsair for ES-335 replacement.

Once you start to think about it, Fender & Gibson guitars are the most copied guitars in the world, and for good reason !

Re: Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

Les Paul, heritage or CAPARISON!! i've not had gas lust like i got off the one i played in some time :D
Strat, G&L or warmoth
Tele, Ditto
SG, tricky.. an archtop RG. thin body, hardtail, thinnish neck :)
Jazzmaster, warmoth
Flying V, jackson

Re: Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

Tokai LS-85 F
Tokai, G&L, Greco, etc. is way better opinion than the super expensive Gibsons, though an ES-137 would be VERY cool axe to have.

Re: Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

Ignoring the Japanese replicas and the boutique copy camp....

Bye bye Gibson, hello Heritage and Hamer.

Bye bye Fender, hello G&L and EBMM.

For Strats I would probably go with either a Shur or an Anderson. Same with Teles. Anderson & Shur are doing some really nice stuff in the Fender vein of things.

For a Gibson I would probably go with a Hamer. Now I do own a Shecter Tempest Special with a set of Duncan Antiquity P90's. It sounds very much like a Les Paul. Great guitar for what I paid for it. In fact I think I paid more for the pickups then I did for the guitar.

Re: Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

to tell ya the truth there is many brands i could get along outside of Fender and Gibson... for modern strats i could get along with some of the higher priced Yamaha's even... great value for the bucks! hell i can get along with so many it would be silly to list them all

but i do have to say i get along with some of the stuff Godin puts out so i'd happy using their stuff anyday

Re: Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

+1 on the Heritage guitars...it's possible they still have some of the guys who worked on the real-y deal-y 59 LPs.

G&L for Fender, even though the only one left with any connectin to the names there is Phyllis Fender now that Goerge Fullerton is gone.
