Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

Re: Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

I would just as readily play one of the top of line Godin models as a Fender or Gibson.

Re: Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

I really wanted to buy a LP but recent opinions on Gibson led me to buy a Hamer Studio Custom...hard to get in this country, and of course a risky venture as they are not well known here and the resale value would not be high. But Hamer make the guitars Gibson *should* be making but don't.

For Fender....i imagine G&L, though i have an '82 Tokai Strat that is probably better than 90% of any Fender Strat ever built.

F & G may have designed some classic guitars, and over the years actually built some of them well, but *some* is not good enough considering what we are expected to pay for the damm things. Pretty much everyone else does those styles better and more consistently these days IMHO.

Not a fan of the band but the James Hetfield signature model is kickazz:

The Ron Wood signature model:

(I'll ignore the relic Strats they offer although the pictures look better than the new Road Worn series).

Reverend

They don't look the same, but they do capture the vibe brilliantly:

My Gibby-style alternatives are (in no particular order): Hamer, Dean, Burny, Greco, Ibanez, and Bacchus. I'm not a Fender fan and I've never had the pleasure of playing a Tokai, but since they're pretty much known for their LP copies (and I don't like LPs much) I wouldn't know. Here are some of my alternatives!

Re: Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

Got to admit I hoped to see more competition to the Telecaster. Same goes for Jazzmasters but I guess we're talking about less popular models here so one should expect less manufacturers.

Gibson are all covered besides the Firebird I guess. Looking at their current catalog - I find no reason to buy a FB from them anyway...

Re: Favorite Fender and Gibson Alternatives

Suhr is cheating to me, though that or Tom Anderson would be my choice for fender style stuff, just as Collings, Heritage or the new Larivee electric would be for gibson-style instruments if price was no object. But the whole point is price is an object.

For value for money, I'd go with G&L and Reverend for fender style stuff. I'm unsure who I'd choose for gibson-style stuff, as I'm not really experienced with the midprice MIJ/MIK Gibson knockoff stuff. I do know that the epiphone and tokai stuff I've tried isn't too impressive...
