Favorite Guitar Pickups

Hi. Just sitting here and thought of this topic of discussion. I searched it and couldn't find this done previously:

I know this is a very subjective topic of discussion and there for, there is no BEST but what are your favorite pickups for for the style(s) of music you play?

For a long time, the lollars in my strat were my favorite pickup for fusion. More recently, however, i purchased duncan antiquities and they're def my fav humbucker if not overall pickups.

For metal, the fav pups i use are the active duncan mustaine livewire pickups in my V's.

I have other pickups that i like but these are my favs. How about you?

Re: Favorite Guitar Pickups

Single Coil: SJAG-1 set (close runner-up: STK-S4)

Humbucker: Screamin Demon (close runner-up: JB)

Re: Favorite Guitar Pickups

Fluence Devin Townsend set for everything. They cover the broadest sonic spectrum of any pickup I've ever used or heard and that is a lot.

SK, for what style(s)?

Maybe not "style," but "influence..." I like my cleans surfy, sparkly and twangy... Both the singles I mentioned above only need the smallest bit of reverb to get there. Driven, they both give the clear, somewhat gritty/low-fi sound of a lot of early 90s grunge/alternative rock. More specifically, I just think the SJAG-1s sound beautiful.

I like both the Demon and the JB for somewhat loud, obnoxious shred-type solos and riffs (but not over the top chunk or de-tuned, more mid-gain,) and more modern types of tones... I'm not huge on the old-school honky "classic" humbucker flavors; the JB is it's own animal, and the Demon is a brash, smooth, scooped rocker that stays clear and un-compressed/dynamic.

Duncan 59 in my SG for classic rock type stuff and the Duncan designed in my VM for the single coil blues and country type stuff.

Really like the Duncan Invader in the strat I just finished building- it's the opposite of everything everyone complains about (at least for me)

Re: Favorite Guitar Pickups

For jazz, the Alnico 2 is awesome for mellow tones, and the jazz is great if you want it sparkley and glassy.

I love the Invader in a bright and tight guitar.

Most of my guitars lean the other way more so I'm running 81, X2N, and Dimbuckers right now,,,,,,and a m22sd that will likely get swapped soon for something different, maybe an Invader or the new JP model (SE).

As do I - ah man, X2Ns are kickass. Ooo tough choice

Re: Favorite Guitar Pickups

The only "tricky" thing I've ran into with the X2N is that they can be a problem in some shallow-routed direct-mounts like the newer Prestige models, and they often need to be installed in a totally flat (thin) mount-ring because if not you can't get them far enough away from the strings to not cause magnet/string-pull.

Ah that's interesting never encountered that- good to know.

Re: Favorite Guitar Pickups

Yeah my 05 rg2570e has good routes for the dimarzios, but my 07 rg1570e has much shallower routes for those "wonderful" house brands. lol

Hahaha, well at least you've got yourself a guitar that can wield a pair of X2N's, love those things - Tom from Blink one on Cheshire Cat, love the tone.

Re: Favorite Guitar Pickups

Also got one in the bridge of my wmd warbeast.
That guitar is sort of naturally scooped (probably that prized "nato" mahogany haha), so the X2N really thickens it while still being modestly crisp and clear.

I first tried the 81 which was OK I guess, then the 85 which really didn't work too well for the guitars already spongy low-end.

The X2N was a shocking improvement, but the D'activator-X neck-model has been a big let-down in the neck,,,,just too bassy like the 85 was in the neck of the same guitar.

I'm thinking about pulling it out of the neck and using it for my full-maple Carvin st300 to go with the Invader or new JP(sonic extacy) at the bridge. It's a bright tight guitar for sure.

Maybe a super2 or EVO2 would be better in the neck of the warbeast.

Hey man, got a problem? X2N! (Haha kidding) Man yeah I could imagine either of those pickups in the thing, but maybe the Invader would be a nice edition to bloat that bright guitar up (hehe). Yeah either of those seem like they'd be cool in the warbeast. Good luck to you my friend

Actually, I don't even know why I'm posting to this thread. I haven't even read the posts. But My thought is that it is a totally ridiculous thread...if you got 100 replies you will probably get 90 different answers.

This thread might as well ask "what is your favorite food?", and "when do you like to eat it?".

Waste.

Re: Favorite Guitar Pickups

To each their own of course,,,,,,but I actually like favorites threads, especially when people list favorites for different situations and explain why.
