Favorite Overdrive!

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

I have a soft spot for the SD-1 and would be perfectly happy with it on my board. However, I favor my Xotic BB Preamp. It's a bit tighter and chunkier that the SD-1 and a bit more transparent at low-mid gain settings. Also, the Bax tonestack makes it more flexible and allows for matching it to different amps.

wow a lot of love for the SD-1 may need to pick one up and try it. Maybe mod it, seems like a sleeper.

Digitech Hardwire CM-2 Tube OD. Tubescreamer-based circuit, effectively a Bad Monkey with more tricks (and a better low end). Run it into a clean SS amp and short of actual tube overdrive it's the best I've heard.

The Cornhole and nothing else. Doesn't look like much but it's literally my ideal overdrive with each component blind tested. The left dpt switch lets me choose between the two circuits we based it off (The ZW-44 and the DOD it was based off) and the the right lets me choose between 1 diode, different cascaded diodes or none. Left side engages the Cornhole and the right is a massive clean boost which can be used either on it's own or into the front of the Cornhole.

Re: Favorite Overdrive!

My absolute favorite is the old Boss OD-1 with the big 14-pin chip. Unfortunately, prices for a vintage one put them out of my reach these days. The closest I can get is by modding a SD-1 to OD-1 specs (the 8-chip version). On my board today I have an OCD v4. Absolutely fantastic overdrive. It does everything I need it to. Sometimes I use it as a standalone drive in to a clean-ish amp and sometimes I use it as a boost in to an already overdriven sound.

BYOC sells kits with the original chip and circuit, full size or mini.

Lately, my favourite is a Dano Daddy O. I bought it a couple of years ago, but never really liked it--it was fizzy and raspy with my Champ 12.
A couple of weeks ago, I bought a Sidekick 30 Reverb and the Daddy O sounds terrific with that. I guess it likes solid-state better than tubes?

The Daddy-O is a clone of the original Marshall Guv'nor, great sounding pedal, kinda between a OD and distortion.

I like my modded SD-1 a lot, the OD-3 is great and underrated too. I'm a big fan of the Guv'nors too.

Yeah, if I ever go back to using a "real" amp, I'll probably put one of those and a GGG Guv'nor together.

The original Guv'nor is great. I almost got one of those when they were still new. Wish I did.
