Favorite Strat Humbucker?

Re: Favorite Strat Humbucker?

I want to clarify/change my position on my prior post...I was describing my preference for the Hot Rails off of my recollection of it, as I hadn't had one installed in a Strat in several years. Well, I have had one sitting around for a while and have had the intention of installing it, and I finally did last night. My updated thought is that it is just too much output, and if I were to desire that much output, I could achieve it with more expressive tone from my Alnico 8 JB. Thus, I dis-recommend the Hot Rails I bragged on yesterday. Either my preferences & playing have changed that much in the past few years or I misremembered the way it sounded. Kind of like seeing an old girlfriend for the first time in several years and she doesn't look as pretty as you remembered.

Re: Favorite Strat Humbucker?

I hope I am not going to annoy the forum by recommending non-Duncan pups. I have limited experience of Seymour Duncans, I hope to have more in the future. Two of the humbuckers I tried in the bridge of my strat(s) I felt as fulfilling. One is the Dimarzio Protrack the other Suhr Thornbucker plus, the Thornbucker is in honeymoon phase yet. Both low output, the former single sized. Great clean tones, blend very well with classic strat single coils, they are not single-coilish though. Both very warm, mellow, smooth sounding pups. I'd say check them out.
I would definitely like to try the Custom shop Pearly Gates. I think it will be overwound, so fatter and smoother than the regular PG, and supposed to work better on a strat. That should be good option if one wants something more agressive sounding than the above mentioned, still staying in the vintage domain. Others here would know that better obviously.

Re: Favorite Strat Humbucker?

depending on how the guitar is wired i wouldnt want a hotter fatter pearly in the bridge. with 250k pots i find the normal pgb is a very good fit with vintage and moderate output singles. still gives a nice boost in volume/fatness compared to the single coils but balances pretty well
