Favorite Traynor YBA-1 mods?

Re: Favorite Traynor YBA-1 mods?

The amp does sound good but not great. I'd like to take it to the next level...more ringing cleans and more biting crunch when pushed. I want to slightly brighten the bass channel and bring down the brightness of the other channel.

Re: Favorite Traynor YBA-1 mods?

Caps are an easy way to "adjust" bass and treble.
Plate resistors can be changed to effect gain. The cat resistor can be moved up or down to provide a hotter or colder bias.
But if you have been looking at a bunch of mods.......I would try one that sounds good to you...follow their lead.
These are old amps. Are the tubes in good shape, and biased to some reasonable number.....and are the caps good to go.?
good luck

Re: Favorite Traynor YBA-1 mods?

The preamps are original Philips tubes. The power tubes are GE labeled made in Holland, so I'm guessing Amperex. I'll get proper bias measurements after I put in fresh power supply and bias caps. Who knows? That might make a huge improvement itself.

I'm thinking slow & steady will be my mantra if I start to mod the amp. One mod at a time. Play it for a few days. See what I think. Tweak more if needed.

Definitely.!
Look at speakers.....57 guys will say it is "the best" they ever played.....69 other guys will say the same speaker is dull, woofy, shrill.
One guys perfect mod might sound horrible to you.
Yeah, Geez...new tubes, new PS and bias cap, set the bias.....that could make it a whole new amp right there.
good luck
