I prefer super strats, but I'm not too picky about the brand as long as it sounds good and feels right.

^^^ I'll ditto Bart up there.

my main preferences are;

6-string w/25.5" or at least a 25" scale
superstrat shape in general
43mm locking-nut w/OFR/edge
medium-thin C neck (18-19mm range at nut and a couple more up high)
wide-flat board that gets even wider up high (58ish-mm)
14"-17" radius with ebony or rosewood
medium-jumbo to regular-jumbo frets
punchy high-output ceramic bridge-pup

everything else is basically open, like brands, woods, body-thickness, colors ect.

Desert island, one guitar, it would have to be my first year BC Rich NJ series red quilt Beast with a Floyd.

To be replaced shortly with a one off custom I'm working on with my favorite things from about 7 different guitars.

Depends on the type of metal I'm playing
Progressive death metal and djent I play on my Ibanez RGIT20FE in drop A because of the neck profile and the sound with the Blackouts I've put in
For other stuff like pantera, Metallica and ozzy I use my Schecter Synyster Gates avenger in standard

I think it eventually ends up being a personal choice. Any solidbody with the right pickups and amp (and player) can do metal well. As far as pickups go, this might help:

Ibanez RG w basswood body. Lightweight. Perfect balance. Super tone.

Carvin DC neckthrough, the choice of underground 80's shred.
