Of of these, which do you think would sound best in an SG? I'm looking for something more 'straight rock' than the full shred set in my jackson.

Re: Favourite set for an SG

I've never thought some AII pickups go well with SGs, too thin. I Had a super distortion/APH in my SG for almost a year, never used the neck pickup. I would use a PAF or something & the SD.... the super distortion RIPS in an SG.

Re: Favourite set for an SG

You need to list a couple more combination choices. The Distortion HB's have a cermic magnet which to me, rules them out for any kind of a decent tone, except for metal. Too bright & harsh, even more so on an ultra thin body.

My choices would be a pair of '59's, or a '59n & a C5. Much better match for an SG.

Re: Favourite set for an SG

Really? For some reason I had heard about those two sets beeing good in an sg... and since it's mahogany and set neck it won't be too bright, and from what I've heard the super distortion is not a bright pup.

Re: Favourite set for an SG

I voted for the AP2's only becuz "none of the above" wasn't an option.

I'd seriously think about trying the C5 with a 59 in the neck.

Re: Favourite set for an SG

Well ok seems I was wrong about the CC... I will concider a C5/59. Any more opinions?

By that description, it should be a PG set.

I'm just got an Epi SG Custom; I'll put a Jazz set and I'll just disconnect the p'up in the middle. You can play any kind of music with'em.

My 335 copy has a Jazz bridge in neck and a C5 in bridge and I just can't describe how much I love this combination!

Re: Favourite set for an SG

Yes well the jazz will be too bright I think.. And I want something with a bit more output in the bridge, so C5 and either a 59 or PG in the neck seems good but I'm still leaning more towards dimarzio here..

The Jazz/C5 and '59/C5 combos are some of the best, they work well in a LP, SG, and 335. Another very good pair is DiMarzio's Bluesbucker/Fred.

Kojack...What kind of Epi SG Custom? The antique ivory or the alpine white with maestro vibrola? I recently got the white vibrola version, which is one of the world's most beautiful guitars by the way, and on the suggestion of the forum, am trying a Phat CatN in the middle position. Middle humbuckers have a disappointing sound quality due to so many coils & magnetic fields crammed into in such a small space, and a P-90 may be an improvement. Another idea is a Phat CatN/Phat CatB/C5. Got to be a way to make all 3 pickups sound great.

What kind of Epi SG Custom?
To blueman335:
Well, if there are only the two you named, so it'll be the antique ivory one. No vibrola. Three ****ty golden Epi p'ups. It plays nice, with the lowest action I've ever got in a guitar, but it sounds... how can I put it...? Like an anemic fart is the closest description I can think of now...

No middle pickup for me, thank you very much; no in this kind of guitar, at least. I do like middle positions in a Strat, but a SG is meant to be used with two p'ups. I'll use it as a backup to a 1967 MIJ Emperador 335 copy, my main guitar. I'm looking for a guitar that can be used to play anything; that's the main reason of the Jazz set. If I was looking for an Angus Young vibe, I'll be getting a PG set, but that's not my intention.

well the jazz will be too bright I think..
to Leveller: No, the Jazz is crystal clear, articulated and cuts through in the mix as a razor... but it also sings like Pavarotti in the shower after having sex, if you know what I mean...
Wanna play metal with them? Just use a lot of gain and adjust your eq a little bit... they can bite you in the ass if you're not careful... just ask JOLLY; he's the metal master using a Jazz set; look for his sound clips; hear it to believe it!

Re: Favourite set for an SG

SG's are thin and the buckers are placed closer to the bridge (both of them). Thus even tho it is an all mahogany guitar, it might be (very) bright/thin sounding.

Thus, CC/A2p set is one of the best sets for a bright SG. I would personally go for a CC and an A2P-bridge for the neck. This is because on SGs neck HB is placed as if the guitar has 24 frets, making the neck tone a bit brigther than usual.

If your SG is a balanced one still CC/A2P sounds good, but so does a set of 59s or PGs. Do a search.

If you could go custom shop, buy a Brobucker for the bridge! It kills in SGs. ;)

Re: Favourite set for an SG

Hehe unfortunately Brobucker is not an option. Is it easy to use a bridge bucker in the neck? I mean, if I put it in like I would've put it in the bridge, the coils get even further away from the neck (which is not good imo). And if I flip if the cables exit the pickup in the wrong corner, so to speak...

to leveller:
You don't need to think about this unless you're splitting it, in this case you DO WANT to put it with the screws pointing toward the bridge, 'cause as Dr. Barlo previously has explained, in a SG the golden point is moved under the screw coil, so you have to move it 180° to put it under the slug coil, which is the one active when split.

And if I flip if the cables exit the pickup in the wrong corner, so to speak.

As long as the cable/s coming out from the p'up is long enough to reach the pots through the body there can't be any problem at all.

Re: Favourite set for an SG

I just got wood when I read about an SG with an A2P/CC combo.

No really, my boss came into my office with some driftwood from the showroom asking about it.

But back on topic, I'd love that combo and I'd love an SG.

Brilliant :D Thanks your suggestions everyone, I'm gonna have to think this through a bit, maybe even buy new (!) so I can use the exchange policy.

Re: Favourite set for an SG

I agree with Caterpillar, Custom at the bridge & Jazz at the neck. I asked the same question recently and had a lot of great feedback.

I did find the standard humbucker wiring was a bit too harsh, so I've played around with the other configurations and its worked wonders, but I can't remember which way around I did it now !!

I use a lot of flange effects so I needed a bright, controlled pick up at the neck and plenty of power at the bridge from which I could back off easily.

Re: Favourite set for an SG

Some Sg's tend to be bright guitars, so to tame that a bit I would consider a Seth Lover in the Neck , or a Jazz, maybe a AlnicoII, and a 59 or a Pearly Gates in the Bridge. I can only tell you my experience, and I like the JazzN and 59B combo.
