Sorry, bro, but I'll have to pass up the offer.

1) I find the guitar tone has far more solid state edginess than I can stand to listen to for very long.

2) There is some weird gating and/or clipping happening at the beginning of almost every guitar note or chord.

3) There is the small matter of the drum machine seeming to be way out of synch with your guitar playing (or vice versa). This would force a fella to choose whether to play in time with the guitar part or the drums. Tricky! (I write as somebody who likes Free Jazz and the scrabbliest incarnations of King Crimson.)

4) You have begun by apologising for sloppy playing. This is always a mistake. Firstly, do not apologise in advance. Secondly, do not submit playing that you already know is sub-standard. Be your own worst critic.

Feel free to put my comments to the test. Stash the drums and guitar track away for a few weeks. Return to it afresh and attempt to solo over it. Alternatively, offer it to a bassist and ask him or her to groove along.

That doesn't seem to be a problem on my end. On my end it came out okay. I'm confused.

I only have access to the versions of the track posted here and available via the SoundCloud hyperlink. Both exhibit clipping and "stuttering" artefacts. The only explanations that I can think of for this are;
1) Something wrong with the SoundCloud upload. (Excessive data compression, perhaps?)
2) Latency issues with your mate's recording hardware/software combination.
3) CPU overload issues with your mate's computer, manifesting as internal clocking errors.
4) Extremely low battery power running in the drum machine.
5) The guitar is not properly co-ordinated with the drum machine patterns.

I see. Well the only issue I can think of on this machine, which is my friend's laptop, is that the CPU is an Intel Centrino. I used Google Chrome to upload it. So my guess is it used all the RAM. But on this end it's no issue. I'm playing it back now and there isn't any issue.

I'm hearing the weird clipping. To me, the sputtering parts of the guitar track at the beginning of every note remind me of the sound when you take a stereo track, and delay an entire track from the other by a few hundred milliseconds. The weird part is, it only happens to the guitar in your clip, but not the drums. But that may be due to the drums being so drowned out by the guitar, or the issues from the guitar track being too distracting.

No, I can't. No issues at all on my end.

Are you serious? How can you not hear what's wrong with it? I don't want to sound mean but I would have difficulty jamming to this track. The timing of the guitar drifts from that of the drums far too often, the tone is rather intrusive and even that isn't so bad compared to the fact that there are literally pieces of audio from the guitar missing. Listen closely, the guitar track is full of weird gaps and clipping.

On no account should you allow that cable to consume alcohol or controlled substances whilst you are playing guitar.

Sounds... I dunno, but if it were a bridge, I'd say it's rickety. I echo the other guys in that there seems to be clipping problems everywhere.

I have a problem with Reaper. When I'm playing a smokin' hot lead the metronome gets off beat a little bit. Fortunately, I'm able to hear it on playback.

Look on the bright side, you have more comments than most guys get when posting a clip around here. That being said, one of the most important things to learn (just like Beer$ pointed out) as a musician is to listen to good criticism. Through your musical journey you are going to get criticism from all over the place. Some people might not like your style, some people might not like the way you get out of bed in the morning, etc) this is, for the most part, subjective criticism. It's good to learn how to let this kind of criticism go in one ear and out the other because you never want to change who you are.

Now, the kind of criticism you are getting in this thread is good criticism. This is criticism you want to hear and should be listening to if you want to become better. You are getting free advice from experienced players, sound engineers/producers and music listeners. Take the advice man and improve!
