Fell back in love with my JB/Jazz set again.

For quite a while now, I just haven't been jelling with them. They're in my Samick LP copy. But ever since I've been running an MXR 10 band through my OR-15's loop, its been my favorite guitar to play. It may have beat out my Ibanez 720 with the '59/A2P set. LOVE the '59, not so much the A2P in the neck. The Samick, for a cheaper LP, just feels and plays great. Now it sounds like I've always wish it would.

I love them; separate from each other. I don't feel they mix well. Oh well, I just built a JB/Jazz pickguard to swap into my project :) I much prefer the flatter, more harmonic character of the Jazz to the bounce of a 59 , and the JB is just a classic.

Re: Fell back in love with my JB/Jazz set again.

New member here. Great info. I'm curious about these pups and what style they are being used for by you folks?

From the SD site: "The Jazz Model neck is a bright, vintage-output humbucker which stays clear even under extreme distortion." Bright and extreme distortion are terms definitely not associated with Jazz, and I've never heard a jazz player with a bright sound like this, well maybe fusion guys but it's not your typical jazzer's tone.

I have an SH2 that the PO installed in my Sheraton neck position and it's very bright compared to other semis I have and the coil tap is for my purposes useless. To make it usable I have to roll the tone down to 2, I also installed a set of .012 flats which helped a bit but it's still not usable for me.

It's being replaced really soon with something more well known for its darker sound an SD Benedetto B6.

Re: Fell back in love with my JB/Jazz set again.

There is a reason the Jazz/JB combo is the best selling pickup combo in history.

Re: Fell back in love with my JB/Jazz set again.

Not my question and not an answer. They're certainly not a "Jazz" pup, and likely the reason the PO sold it.

I was asking what styles of music you folks found it usable for?

The Jazz is the worst named pickup on the planet. It is for anything BUT Jazz. It's an all around great sounding modern PAF. I'd use it as a go to for: Pop, articulate cutting leads from the neck in a Les Paul. Chicago Blues on the neck. Neck funk whack-whacka sound. Cool clean metal arpeggios...

All of that said, I have a Jazz/JB combo in an Epiphone Dot Studio. That guitar is really a rocker, but I can and will "jazz" on it. The JB let's me really lower the treble on the mp and tone, while still maintaining some edge to it. But an A2P would be a far far better choice for real Jazz

You know, you really can use that combo for most anything.

Re: Fell back in love with my JB/Jazz set again.

I could never make that set work for me at all in anything I play, but I understand why so many people love it. It just isn't my thing for the music I like to make. But I can say that about most high output pickups.

Thanks, I thought as much, but I figured I would get a reasonable reply here if nowhere else. I had thought about the A2P but the Benedetto fell in my lap and I think / hope it will work.

I agree. Like them both, but I think the Jazz is too scooped and underpowered for the JB. JMO. Then again, a lot more people seem to love them as a combo than people who don't like them. Don't get me wrong, I like both, especially the JB.
