Fender Aerodyne Telecaster Pickup Advice

Hey guys.

Ive got a CIJ Fender Aerodyne Telecaster with basswood body, maple neck with rosewood fretboard traditional bridge pickup and a p90 at the neck.

Ive always found the stock p90 neck neck to be a bit dark and boomy, so Ive come across a Duncan Vintage P90 neck pup for a good price and wondered what might be a good match for it in the bridge?

I play Classic Rock, Punk, Indie and Britpop type stuff so assuming Im after something more on the vintage/lower output side of things?

Cheers.

Re: Fender Aerodyne Telecaster Pickup Advice

A lot of stock pickups can be dull, but guitars too can be poor hosts for certain pickup types too. Its certainly no bad thing to upgrade to a Duncan......you'll know straight away whether the pickup or guitar was the issue.

As to the bridge, you'll need something a bit more punchy than pure vintage to match output - the Jerry Donahue might be the go here if you want a true singlecoil tele tone but with enough meat to compete.

Re: Fender Aerodyne Telecaster Pickup Advice

I have had one of those (export/U.S.A. market model) since new in 2004.

It's still stock, but I have always hated that neck pickup, and just used the thing as an Esquire.

I love the stock bridge pickup. Very stinging and aggressive, in a good way.

I have plans for a Firebird pickup in the neck slot. If you mounted one in the old Les Paul Deluxe style (hard mount to the ring to make the pickup/ring a single unit), it would be no problem to put one in there without losing the ability to return to stock.

The ultra slick sleeper mod is to send the stock pickup in to Duncan and have them convert it into one of their own models.

Hey guys.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I picked the Vintage P90 up in a trade and my original plan was to put it in the bridge of 1 of my other guitars, but when I got it I found out it was a neck model so Ive had to change my plans!

I'll look into the Jerry Donahue as you've said.

I'd think about the Broadcaster too, if you want something a little more grinding (but not crazily hot), with flat poles.

Thanks for that, I'll look into that 1 as well.

I had thought about a Quarter Pound, but wasn't sure how much of that Traditional Tele tone they keep.

the broadcaster is a great tele pup, the qp is a great pup but doesnt sound very tele like to me

Thanks Jeremy, Im going to discount the Quarter Pound at this time.

I currently only have 1 Tele so don't want to stray too far from something traditional.
