Re: fender blues deluxe reissue vs hot rod deville
The deville has more dirt on tap than a blues deluxe. It has a more agressive tone with a bit more scoop. Some people dont like the deluxe/deville distortion, but with humbuckers i believe it sounds excellent. I used to own a deluxe but changed to a boogie for a while. Anyway - i was sitting in with a band that had a hot rod as a backline. Just plugged in, and did not bother turning on my tubescreamer and had a ball. The sound engineer came up to me after the gig (this guy tour manages for Lulo Reinhardt and peter green) and raved about my sound! Go figure...its just a hot rod! So yeah, i like them clean or dirty. The thing that i don't like is the taper on the clean volume, which is too twitchy, but easy to remedy. The reverb is a bit overcooked too, but again, easy to tame.
The Blues is also loud, but the dirty channel is a bit thicker in the mids and less dirty. It is more in the vein of a vintage tone. Both amps work well with overdrive pedals, but neither really need them. Bear in mind that the hot rod has a send/return and also an extra little gain boost switch for the dirty channel that gives your 20db of boost on the crunch channel.
If you get either amp with the stock eminence/fender special design speaker then that would be an immediate replace for my money. They are a very ordinary (and i mean ordinary like Aussies use it .....that is to say pretty poor) speaker. It takes hardly any push at all to flab out the bottom end - you can even do it with the 15watt blues junior.
Put in a nice thick warm speaker like a cannabis rex or whatever kind of speaker that has an eq curve that takes your fancy and you are on a winner. Stay away from the Jensen c12n if you value your hearing - they are very bright and hard in the top end (but still worlds better than the stock lame speaker).
