Fender Blues DeVille... For the dorm?

Re: Fender Blues DeVille... For the dorm?

You need to get over tone for a moment and start thinking about Dorm life.

is that sh1t for real?
we see that in movies; we live most of our youth in the jealous shadow of US college/dorm life.

you bastards.

Re: Fender Blues DeVille... For the dorm?

Ah man, the digitech looks sweet, but like i mentioned I have the gt-3 for headphone and stereo play and it does the job pretty well. Need something that makes noise on it's own. Aceman i do like your philosophy and am looking along those lines. How did the 50 work out, out of curiosity? Kookaburra- I really liked the classic 30 I played and passed up a local deal on one.... So now I have to wait on another used one since I cant justify the six bills the local shops want.... I guess I'll just keep my eyes open for deals on sub 50w tubes. Sounds like my best options are fender or peavey.

Honestly tone is the whole point of the amp as i'm well aware no matter what i get it'll probably just live in the closet when not played out, which is when you really want it. Crazy music town so with any luck I'll be playing out quite a bit. Rest of the time I'll run headphones or computer speakers through the gt-3. Does anyone have experience with the epi valve series combos?

I have a Boss ME70. IMHO, the Boss tones and the Digitech tones are not even in the same league.

At least try out an RP1000 or 500 just for fun sometime. Just don't blame me if you end up buying one! :D

Re: Fender Blues DeVille... For the dorm?

i haven't played the epi valve series but I did own the blackheart 5W, a similar amp designed by the same guy: Pyotr Belov.

It was a dynamic and responsive amp, but the EQ of everything seemed kinda bland. Like "middle of the road", or "not especially british or american" or "this is a guitar amplifier and this is what your guitar sounds like" kinda amp. Not bad, just not particularly colourful.
Even at 5W, I could never turn it up past 4 in an apartment. No master volume. I ran it with an attenuator and I liked it. Without the attenuator, when the speaker got going, whoo boy it was loud and proud. Good el84 crunch by around 8/10 on the volume but it was a lil muddy or blurry past that, even after throwing in a really articulate speaker.
The best sound was right at about 5 on the volume. Just where it starts to distort. Really punchy and still pretty clean, but loud.

Re: Fender Blues DeVille... For the dorm?

When I was living on campus my rules for amps:

- It shouldn't go above loud speaking volume during the day
- It shouldn't go on at all at night (headphone jacks are a requirement)
- It shouldn't tempt people to steal it. Cheap is exactly what you want.

I would get an inexpensive, small SS amp with a headphone jack. Keep your big amp at home (unless you're playing out all the time). The volume thing is a big deal . . . you don't want a hundred people pissed off at you during your first year in residence, and the university will come down hard on you if you get enough complaints.

Re: Fender Blues DeVille... For the dorm?

You know man I been thinkin about it, and when I'm in school I have a deville I keep there in the band room, and i had it in my dorm for awhile and it's manageable, i mean just cause it's 60 watts doesn't mean you gotta use all 60, and it sounded better at those volumes than the blues junior the school had and I stole & kept in my dorm for practice. Haulin the deville up & down 3 flights of stairs kind of sucked though so if it's gonna be the amp you're using i wouldn't count on hauling it back & forth

If you need something cheap & loud that'll do jazz tones all day and is relatively light for its size & power get this

it's basically a roland JC120 clone but i like it more, it has more of that warm woody tone than the JC, which sounds kind of stiff to me sometimes. I've never used the drive channel on it but it probably sucks, so, yanno, pedals. They're usually about $200

I have one of those - it's a very good clean amp.

It doesn't take pedals well.

But it is the baddest and best SS clean amp on tha Urf, I am convinced.

Very full and warm. I have gigged mine as a bass amp.

Re: Fender Blues DeVille... For the dorm?

Well, went for the blues deville. Scored it for 335 as it had a pot replaced. Already tested it at low volume in my bedroom and sounded better than my vox and couldn't be heard by a friend in the next room even through our thin walls. Like I mentioned it's not getting played in the dorm anyway so I'm not to worried. It's light too! Much more portable than the hot rod or even the vt50. For now I'm psyched, we'll see how I feel about it in a few months! For the price I couldn't say no and if it ends up being too big I'll store it at home for a year. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Re: Fender Blues DeVille... For the dorm?

So I ordered a Tweaker and may get a MiniMass or something when it comes in.

Will I still get chimey cleans with the attenuator? I know a lot of it has to do with the volume thats how you get that airy clean sound from such amps... I am making sure my purchase won't negate why i bought the amp in the first place!
