im sure its been posted a million times but opinions change and so do amps, we all know that. so for the millionth time, whats an amp that can do both and do both well? preferably under a grand.

Re: fender blues to marshall grind

Get a fender twin and run a tonebone hot british pedal into it, apparently that works a charm!

Re: fender blues to marshall grind

What Fender sound do you want? For a tweed sound, get a used Bassman RI and crank it. :)

For a BF tone, I'd go with a modded early SF Super and run an EH English Muff'n into it.

Folks rave about Rivera amps as well.

Re: fender blues to marshall grind

yeah i was thinking about the rivera, really 700? thats not bad at all i thought their prices were always astronomical. maybe ill keep checkin the bay. stratdeluxer i was always udner the impression the dsl50 was just sort of modern hi-gainish sounding. how are its cleans?

i guess for fender sounds im looking more bf than tweed. either will do though i can work around both.

What about the Marshall DSL series amps?

I suppose a modded DSL50 could work, but in stock form, the clean channel is kind of flat. It has no bounce, sparkle, or chime when compared to a Twin RI.

Re: fender blues to marshall grind

I was thinking a stock DSL50 would be a good possibility. I remember walking into Guitar Center and hearing this fantastic bluesy tone. It was a guy playing a DSL50 on the clean channel with a nice strat into a 1960 Cab (I think that's the model). With the right guitar and cab, for me, the DSL50 is hard to beat. It ginds for days, too. The only drawback for me is the cheap switches and jacks.

But the Rivera Knucklehead is a sweet amp, too. I only played on once, but that was enough to know it's a good amp. It seemed easy to dial in a good sound, was easy to play with and had lots of sweet spots.

Re: fender blues to marshall grind

mmm ill definitely look into the dsl. what about the rivera chubster? it looks awsome with the red tolex and blonde grill and its in my price range. wouldnt need to buy a cab for it unless i really wanted one. anyone have any opionions on the chubsteR?

Re: fender blues to marshall grind

The chubster is a great little amp. Plenty of power if you're looking at the 40-watt 1x12 combo. The DSL is also a great choice. It definitely got the marshall grind, and IMO is one of the best cleans marshall has done. I suggest that you play both of them.

Re: fender blues to marshall grind

The DSL does have a good clean tone...it doesn't really sound like a Fender to me, it's not as bright or jangly, but it can be very clean and with a touch of gain the breakup is really nice. I'm running it through a small sealed cab and the tone is super fat. I've been very pleasantly suprised how my strat sounds through it...

Re: fender blues to marshall grind

IMO a 59 ri bassman can do clean, overdrive, and distortion really well

i dunno if it's marshall-like distortion, but bridge the channels, crank it, and you might be suprised

Re: fender blues to marshall grind

If you do end up with a Fender amp and want Marshall distortion the new MI Audio Crunch Box ($99) is hard to beat. I've had mine for two weeks now and love it. The low end really stays tight and it has a great 'Plexi' tone. Check out the raves over at www.thegearpage.net
