I bought a new California Series Tele in 2000. Keep in mind that every guitar neck is different. However, the neck on mine seemed to move daily. One day it was playable and the next day the strings would be on the fretboard.
I have the California series Tele. Its Candy apple red with a Strat neck pickup & a Tele Bridge Pickup. They are stock Tex/Mex pickups. I put 6 graphite barrels on the bridge to replace the stock metal ones.... other then that the guitar is stock. There should be a pic of it in my sig.
When I went to buy this I had my mind made up that I was going home with an American standard Tele, but I kept coming back to this one. Everytime I tried the more expensive American Standard.... I just couldn't feel it. This guitar had a better unplugged feel to it and it sounded better plugged in also. After I bought this I likeed the sound of the neck so much I wound up buying a complete set of Tex/Mex for my Strat. I think I paid $400 for this guitar and it was worth every penny! Nice ax
Quality's about on par with the HWY 1s these days. Nothing to worry about. I say mint green guard, vintage Safe T tuners, alnico pro in the neck and JD in the bridge. Yessir yessir.
i had a similar experience with the California Series just being 'right'...i must've played 15 strats the day i bought my California Strat...MIMs and Highway 1's and MIA's and whatever...i knew i was taking home the one i did after two chords.
