he guys...saw one of these ugly little red knob fender tube amps for $50 in a local paper... how are these little things? would it make a pretty good little tube practice amp? all i know is that they are 10-12 watts, with 1X12 speaker..

Re: Fender Champ 12?

what are the characteristics? like a fender amp i suppose? i would most likely be cranking pretty loud to get some gritty blues tones......how loud could the 12 watts get? enough for a laid back jam band?

Re: Fender Champ 12?

Probably not, unless you mike it and run it through a monitor. The sound is vintage, kinda raunchy, bluesey, so it would definitely be a good practice amp for you. Jerry Douglas recorded a lot of his lap steel work through a Champ, he got an awesome sound out of his.

Re: Fender Champ 12?

Jump all over it !!!! I got one it's A LOUD 12 watts !! And it's a Class A
amp so it's got a sweet chime to it. The input jacks on em' break but it's
a easy fix. It's a awesome practice amp , And it's loud enuff to hang
with a band ( you won't be blowing anyone over like the Twin) But
you will beable to hear yourself. Any ?? about it let me know.
Need sound clips I got em'

Yeah I can vouch for that amp aswell, a buddy of mine does some recording with one, Nice little amp, I would have never thought it was 12 watts if I didnt already know. Chances are if you havent got it already It would be sold, I would buy it in a second!

Re: Fender Champ 12?

do these usually sell for more than $50? cause i would think they would (just makin sure i could at least get me money back if im not diggin it)

Re: Fender Champ 12?

if it works, and you dont get it, ill jump on it!

also, is that the amp that eric clapton and duane recorded layla from?

Re: Fender Champ 12?

well, i looked up the champ 12 on the fender amp guide and it said it was made from 87 - 92 or somethin.....this is one of those ugly red knobbed fenders (which i dont care about)....but yes, there were many differnt versions of the champ, but it isnt the old one that clapton and duane would have used (but i wonder how different it is compared to the old one?)

Re: Fender Champ 12?

If it's in decent shape it's probably worth around $300, maybe more. There's a tweed on ebay that's up to $1,120. You ain't gonna find a tweed for $50, BUY THAT AMP!

Re: Fender Champ 12?

Champ 12s go for around $250 on ebay. You can change the red knobs
they came w/t black knobs to. The original Tweed ,BF/SF champs that
EC used had a 8 inch speaker, one 6V6 and one channel. very basic
The champ 12 has 2 channels ,reverb and other features the old ones
didn't have.

Re: Fender Champ 12?

I've tried out a couple of these little amps in the past and wasn't overly impressed, they sounded raspy to me - however Torres Engineering has an easy mod which really improves the overall sound of the amp (clean and overdrive channels), here's and excerpt from HC> take it for what it's worth, the mod is cheap and easy to install.

"I play blues/rock 'n'roll on a G&L S500 and Fender Tele. I really had no complaints with the amp before this mod except I thought it was a little harsh sounding at higher volumes. This kit fixed this problem and then some. The amp is so much warmer and open sounding. The overdrive channel, which to my ear was horrid, has been transformed into a very serious Marshall sounding drive channel. The clean channel finnally breaks up into a sweet tweed like overdrive when picked agressively. I can not overrate this mod,it's just amazing. I was thinking of buying a new amp,not now"

I did the Torres mod to mine, and yeah the O.D. channel screams.
But I think it darken the clean channel a little? Did you notice this on yours??
It may be my tubes (that I think are original?) The 1st thing I did when
I did the mod was plugin the OD channel and fire away!! So maybe I sucked
the little bit of life outta the tubes that they had in them? Well I have to
retubed anyway,But I was wondering if anybody noticed this after the mod?
If they lost some of the sweet chime?
