Fender CS 69 pole piece question

Hi all,

I just installed a new set of fender custom shop 69's in my strat. I put the highest resistance pup in the bridge. I also noticed that on the pickup I put in the bridge, the high E pole piece seems to stick out much more proud than on the other two pickups. All of the other pole piece heights are the same across the 3 pickups. I looked at the bottom of the pickup to see if somehow that pole piece was not flush with the bobbin, but it is. So it seems they just used a longer pole piece for this particular pickup (like maybe one of the pole pieces for the D string?).

Has anyone seen this? Any suggestions on what to do?

Re: Fender CS 69 pole piece question

I'd be interested in seeing a picture of the pickups all together. It sounds like a manufacturing mistake, like they possibly put the wrong pole piece in the high E spot. It could definitely make the high E overly loud, but maybe not. The stagger matters less the lower you set your pickups.

I would be curious to see a pic myself, but ultimately it comes down to how it sounds.

If it sounds fine, then is fine.

Re: Fender CS 69 pole piece question

Stagger issues aren't usually due to putting in the wrong length pole, it's usually because the pole not being put in deep enough.

If the OP has any experience with this type of work, it would be possible to push it in a bit further. But even if you knew what you were doing, there would be s substantial risk of damaging the coil.

I'd just send it back and get it replaced if it poses a major tonal issue.

he said it was flush on the under side

What's the worse that could happen if he does it right? Bottom the polepiece out? If it's too late to return the set, the OP can pay a tech to do it. If the tech doesn't break the pickup, great, if he does, the OP will likely get a refund. If he doesn't get a refund, he also gets the chance to find a better tech.

ive been a tech for years and i wouldnt take that job on any fiber bobbin pup, potting or no, and definitely not on one of the e poles. plastic bobbins, sure, but these arent

Re: Fender CS 69 pole piece question

This is really clear cut; you should get a replacement pickup, or an exchange. Sure the pickup might work fine, but that pickup is technically defective, and it has less value on the used market because it's defective. You got ripped off, if only by a little bit of money.

That's an extreme way to put it, but nonetheless correct. If it makes an unbearable difference in string volume, send it back if you can.
