Fender Custom Shop Fat '50s Single-Coil Strat

Which pickup would you rate closest to the Fender Custom Shop Fat '50s Single-Coil Strat (as on David Gilmour's Strat) but flat or with modern staggering? I'm interested especially for the neck possition.

Thanks!

Re: Fender Custom Shop Fat '50s Single-Coil Strat

I use Fender Fat 50's and push the polepieces down (and up for the B) to make a flatter stagger. I touch the pole magnets with a soldering iron for a few seconds to make the wax soften slightly, then push on the polepiece with a small screwdriver handle. I can't tell that it changes the tone, but it gets rid of stratitis on modern neck radiuses. I get the whole "vintage is better" thing, but I would like to see vintage stagger on single coils die a quick death.

Before anyone adds that this is going to "break the coil and destroy a pickup" let me say that I have asked dozens of players who have CLAIMED that it can ruin them, and not one of them has ever seen it actually happen. If you have seen it, I would like to know what brand and model, and whether the pole piece was heated or not. I have personally done it to over two dozen individual pickups from various manufacturers, and have never had one problem. Maybe I'm just lucky? I don't know.

Re: Fender Custom Shop Fat '50s Single-Coil Strat

Thank you Mr. B,
I did that with the mexican PUs and it worked even without the heating up as the pole pieces are held between 2 magnet bars and there is no back/base plate. I didn't expect it to be possible on a proper PU where the pole pieces are the magnets, but know, with your explanation I will dare.

Dotsdad,
I find the SSL-2 (1) way to chimy compared to the 50s fat, I was thinking about the Alnico II, but still not fat enough.

Gibson175,
from Gilmour I like only the neck sound, not the bridge.

Last night I came across the "Eternal Revelation" by http://www.hotrodguitarparts.com but had my problem with the staggering and besides, they are only sold as a set (I'm resurecting my HSS strat and want to keep it HSS).

Thank you all!

Huh, didn't know the Gilmour custom shop model used fat 50s. Very odd considering his black strat would have the stock 70s pickups which would be closer to the cs 69s, at least for the neck and middle.

I'm sure the CS model is meant to emulate the a Black Strat as it currently exists. He's obviously replaced the Bridge pickup quite a few times, it wouldn't surprise me if he replaced the 70 neck pickup with a more 50's style one over the years.

The website is calling the middle a "custom wound single coil strat" but I distinctly remember it being a CS69.

It actually came with late 60s pickups but the current pickups in it are dated for the early 70s, excrpt the bridge of course.
