Fender Deluxe Active P-Bass Special

Hi guys,

Just got this in a trade, a Fender Deluxe Active P-Bass Special, the black version with the rosewood fretboard:

As a guitar player, I just got it for recording bass lines at home, and was wondering what kind of Duncans would complement this bass for vintage, yet powerful rock tones. Or would you advise against any swap? Any opinions regarding the bass itself?

Re: Fender Deluxe Active P-Bass Special

So far, I'm happy with the sounds I'm getting, but I find the Precision pickup somewhat lacking for my taste. But my first instinct is to keep them, and save for for Duncans for my guitars... ;)

At your next string change, unfasten the screws of the stock P pickup. Remove the plastic covers and inspect the coil bobbins. If the bobbins are formed of black plastic, the pickup could be MIM or MIA. Either way, you would be right to upgrade it.

In recent years, Fender has supplied the American Standard Precision Bass with their American Vintage Re-Issue 60s style split coils pickup. This is a distinct improvement on the previous, insipid sounding offering.

For greater output and general Rock power, try the SPB-4 Steve Harris model.

For a practical compromise between classic and modern sounds, I would go active with this pickup pair. http://www.seymourduncan.com/pickup/lightnin-rods-pj-set

Awesome!! I would love to have one of those.

Re: Fender Deluxe Active P-Bass Special

Switch them to Quarter Pounders, and they will lack no more! They will also rock harder, if that is what you are going for.
