Fender Elite Strats and Teles...

Cost not withstanding, has anyone played the latest range of Elite Strats or Teles? I’m a big fan of vintage style Strats, but I’ve also got a soft spot for modern guitars too. (I’ve got a Deluxe Plus Strat from the 90’s) The Autumn Blaze Metallic is a killer color and the HSS Strat and Tele look like super versatile instruments. Any feedback from those that have played them?

Re: Fender Elite Strats and Teles...

I have not tried them yet, but I always did like the Elite line in the early 80s...some interesting innovations there.

Re: Fender Elite Strats and Teles...

I haven't played one, but their existence makes the 80s Elites much more difficult to google/find on ebay.

I played an elite strat for about an hour....my impression: N4 pickups totally gutless; S1 switch for useless pickup combinations; guitar itself was a great player...

Re: Fender Elite Strats and Teles...

nice axes for sure.
However, i was asked to set one up, and it was impossible because some genius (either in the fender factory or in the guitar shop it came from) had put red loctite in the bridge saddles.

my 2c: Just get a standard or one of the newer professional series and install the pickups you like best. If it is a standard, swap out the bridge saddles for some solid brass gotohs. Ditch the no load wiring etc too.

Re: Fender Elite Strats and Teles...

I owned one of the new Elite Teles for a few months. It was a great instrument; I only sold it because for the $, I thought I could get better value by modding MIM Teles.

Aside from the Elite Tele I owned, I have played a few Elite Teles in stores. They offered some variety in experience, but I'll chalk that up to the variation possible in stores when customers play/wear out display instruments.

The current Elites do have beautiful finishes. I had the mystic black Tele, which had a cool sparkle thing going on. The thinlines are especially pretty, though you have to be careful about neck dive - try before buying, or go for the heavier ones - because the locking tuners are relatively heavy.

The main factor that got me into trying the Elite Series was the promise of N4 pickups improving on the N3 ones. That promise was fulfilled, though the bar wasn't high - Fender's N3 noiseless pickups are pretty mediocre. To my ears, the N4 pickups offer better performance, meaning "feeling less dead and dull", but ultimately I still feel that DiMarzio and Seymour Duncan noiseless pickups are better. In the bridge position, my Teles currently have SD Vintage Stack, a DiMarzio Area Hot, and G&L MFD pickups, and all are better - more toneful and "alive" - than the N4 pickups.

The Elite series does offer the possibility of not having to mod anything, since the guitars come with most of the usual mods already installed - locking tuners, noiseless pickups, 6 saddle bridge. I did like the S-1 switching in the Tele. It only worked in middle position, and it switched that setting from parallel to series; in practice, it essentially acted as a boost, a useful feature.

The molded hardshell case that comes with the Elite series is high quality. I like the fact that's designed to be stackable. The Professional series, however, also comes with the same hardshell case and thus potentially offers more bang for the buck, especially if you can find one that comes with mods, like locking tuners or upgraded pickups. In the Elites, I also like the slightly sculpted heel that allows better upper fret access.

In sum, the Elite series guitars are very good. They're slightly spendy when bought new, though even at new prices, they are a much better value for the "top of the line" than, say, Gibson or PRS guitars. I'm kind of a traditionalist when it comes to guitars, and the Elites don't feel to me all that modern or foreign.

Re: Fender Elite Strats and Teles...

I’ve played them a fair bit but haven’t owned one. I LOVE the neck. IMHO best neck out there except for Charvels.

Really didn’t like the noiseless pickups. They would go out immediately.

Re: Fender Elite Strats and Teles...

Thanks for the comments!

I figure that I’d be replacing pickups no matter what guitar I choose. The Autumn Blaze Metallic and Mystic Black finishes are killer and the neck is super intriguing. The locking tuners, S-1 (which can be used for almost anything) and other upgrades are nice additions too...

Re: Fender Elite Strats and Teles...

The truss rod wheel is a bit polarizing in the looks department. I think it’s just convenient and found it helpful on my Charvel.

Re: Fender Elite Strats and Teles...

The wheel is a great idea, though. I've had one on my Ernie Balls for years, and it is *so* easy to use. I'd go for function, any day.

Re: Fender Elite Strats and Teles...

Thats hilarious

Its a hiend blatant knockoff by Fender of a hiend ESP sorta-knockoff OF a fender... lol

Havent played one yet. Still, it's nice that they started trying, but I doubt it can touch an ESP Vintage Plus (even forgetting how sad the N-series pickups are)

Re: Fender Elite Strats and Teles...

What ESP is this a knockoff of?

Its a vintage plus series clone, thru and thru

Shaved heel, truss rod at bottom of fretboard, improved hardware and electronics, better neck

....somebody at fender FINALLY noticed that they weren't the ones with the best strat

Re: Fender Elite Strats and Teles...

Am I missing it, or does the ESP Vintage Plus not have the "wheel;" only the standard neck-butt truss adjust? Fender has offered guitars with shaved heels, improved hardware/electronics, different neck specs etc. before. Really the Elite just seems like a slightly new marketing tack for a lot of the same stuff Fender (and other manufacturers) have taken to applying to Strats... Plus the wheel, which I think is pretty cool.

I think in the more recent years it had it but if anything I would associate the wheel with music man (I wonder if there’s a patent for that), the C to D neck with Charvel (looks like esp is thin u?) and the better hardware and shaved heel with... anybody.

ESP has had a ton of variations over the years.

Even vintage pluses with "half and half" rosewood and maple fretboards.

But yeah I actually meant that it SEEMS like Fender took a look at high end competitors, went "omg what do we do", and finally shot back with a model that seems to combine all the typical little tweaks in the arsenal with prestigious-sounding branding and same price category as rivals too

Re: Fender Elite Strats and Teles...

Here's my NGD thread from when I got mine.

I still feel the same way about it, although, I'm not too into single coils, so the N4s work for me. I did pick up an Ibanez AT-10 the other day, and I think I like the DiMarzio Cruisers a little better. But like I said, I'm notuch if a single coil guy.

I still like the neck too. It still feels Fendery, but isn't as annoying to me. It plays well.

But, if I had to do it over again, I'd just get the next step down (can't remember the name) and just swap out pickups. They're prettyuch the same guitar, IIRC, with the big difference being the electronics.

Re: Fender Elite Strats and Teles...

American Professional? The neck is definitely different between the American Elite and American Professional. I need to try them both out.

I’m a sucker for the Autumn Blaze Metallic on the Elites!

I’ve got way too many Strat style guitars, I’d need to get rid of two to justify one new one.

I looked it up, and you're right. Forgot about that.

If you're just looking for 3 single coil slots and a fast neck, Jackson recently came out with the Soloist SL4X. It does have a Floyd Rose, though. Don't know if you like 'em or not, though.
