Fender/EVH Wolfgang pickup specs

Just an FYI for anyone who is interested :1:

So after trying and failing to find a 100% confirmed spec sheet on the EVH wolfgang pickups, I decided to go to the source and email EVH support.

Fender/EVH support says:

Bridge: average ~14k, Alnico II

Neck: average ~16k, Alnico II

Really interesting to hear Eddie went back to A2 after going with A5's in both the PV and EBMM pickups. Look to be about the same output at the PV's. But the pickups in the my wolfie don't feel all that hot; which makes sense now after learning they are A2's. :naughty:

Re: Fender/EVH Wolfgang pickup specs

Neck 16? Bridge 14?

Their specs are about as accurate as anybody's, I suppose.

Re: Fender/EVH Wolfgang pickup specs

I'm more intrested in the henry's of the pickups.....magnets are magnets, it is the winding thread and contruction that matters.

No idea on the gauge, 43 maybe?? Like i said, for 16k and 14k they don't feel or sound super hot. Bridge definitely has CC type characteristics, but without being overly fat and flabby sounding

that's interesting. i always thought the wolfgangs were ceramic and the frankenstein was a2. i currently cannot find anything online that would back me up on that, so maybe i dreamt it!

Re: Fender/EVH Wolfgang pickup specs

So how would the CC differ from the EVH? They are both ~14k and A2 mags......but one has 43G enamel and the other has 44G polysol

What I've read is that the thicker wire offers stronger highs and bass while thinner wire has a thinner and smoother sound, which is complemented, by more winds and encouraged since you can fit more wraps on a bobbin. So I'd assume the evh is kind of like a slightly toned down CC with a slightly firmer bass. Just a speculation on my part though.

Re: Fender/EVH Wolfgang pickup specs

Some of the information is completely wrong in this post. I will try and help clear some of it up.
EVH Frankenstein Degaused A2 Mag
EVH Wolfgang USA Ceramic Mag
CC A2 Mag

both the Franky and CC are close in DCR. Wolf is higher.

Magnets are an important part of the equation. I have an EVH Frankie (A2) in my 5150 Clone and it sounds fantastic, a CC would have provided the same results most likely as that is the pup EVH supposedly used from Fair Warning to Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (Judgment Day was last use of 5150 I have read). I use EVH Wolfgang pups in my Mahogany/Ebony ProAxes and they sound amazing (didn't like the Parallel Axis). I use JBs in my Alder bodied Kramers, and CC in my Barettas (perfect maple body match). My Wolfgang USA Basswood/Maple Cap sounds amazing too.

The 78' model to me looks and sounds like a slightly hotter 59' and is what he would have had for SOME of the songs on VH1. Other than that his Flying V and Destroyer would have used probably the Super 70 or Super Distortion. EVH's tone has been different on every album. It's not the same with respect to gain (amp types) and fx. Example 1984 he uses more of the Eventide Harmonizer (Micro Pitch fx) on songs and it sounds nothing like VH1-WACF....it's his playing that you hear that is similar because it is him.

The CC is one of the best pickups I have used on a high gain amp like my 5150's (gen 1 and gen 3 100S) and my Friedman Mod 83' JCM 800. The A2 mag is great.
EVH has said with his EVH Wolfgang pickup that it is more of a neutral sounding pickup to boast the what he is doing on the fretboard.

Re: Fender/EVH Wolfgang pickup specs

Interesting.

FMIC told me the Wolfgang magnet is an A2. And I think the 78 might be more like a variation in an overwound PG.

Curious how there is so much info out there about EVH and how different ears hear different things.

Re: Fender/EVH Wolfgang pickup specs

I don't know the specs but my EVH sounds great for slide work. The switch confused the hell out of me so I changed that.
