Fender Frontman DSP... tell me about them.

Re: Fender Frontman DSP... tell me about them.

Hey all,

Looking for a Fender Amp that will model a few of their more well-known amps and found this:

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/...an-Combo-Amp-with-DSP-Effects?sku=483720#used

What is your take on it and how does it sound?

Will it go from a glassy clean to a Pink Floyd like sounds?

It'll do a sterile clean, and a kind of a sizzly, square wave / hard clipping distortion.

Would be a decent jazz amp - the cleans are very, very direct.

I have a 2001 Fender Ultimate Chorus, which is a better amp than the FM212, but similar. I have played an FM212 for a gig before out of necessity, and it was pretty much a cleans-only amp. The drive it had was unpleasant, and it didn't take my pedals well.

If you can get a super-champ XD and run it into a large cab I'd suggest that instead. The power tubes do smooth the tone out, but it somehow falls short of making it feel like a "real" tube amp. It'll do some deep, creamy, neck-pickup solo stuff, though. Maybe you can get a good cab with loud speakers for it. The thing is you can't footswitch the channels, so maybe it's not so giggable in that context, if that's what you need.
You maybe outta get something that gets glassy cleans and pink floyd sounds on it's own, without modeling, if you can help it. Just a good, channel switching Fender tube amp. They're just as versatile if you know how to use em, and they all sound better. The new Supersonic 112 comes to mind, or the original super sonic. You probably aren't looking to spend that much if you're looking at the FM series though. Cheaper than the SS, The hot Rod Deluxe isn't terrible, it's actually pretty good, but it's got more midrange than the blackface 'glassy clean'. The drive sounds a lil rough around the edges but it's a lot better than a solid state amp. Then there's the Hot Rod's relative the Deluxe VM. haven't played that one but it comes highly recommended.

Some other people will chime in soon about Vox modeling amps, if you have to stick with modeling. Those seem to be pretty popular.

Yeah, to sidebar your original question, my VOX Valvetronix is the best-sounding amplifier I've ever had; and I have an all-tube Fender and have had some pretty nice tube gear over the years.

Re: Fender Frontman DSP... tell me about them.

The Cyber Twin is nice, but a little out of my price range for what I want to spend right now.

Yeah I knew it would be. I dunno though, I'd say go with vox if you gotta have modeling. Even if you gotta pay for an extension cab for a bigger sound. The voxs are touted as being "where it is" by several modeling amp users here. I haven't used one before but they pop up in just about every amp search thread where they guy wants something versatile for not a lot of $$$

Re: Fender Frontman DSP... tell me about them.

Do what I did. Get yourself the Frontman 65 or in your case, the 212, and swap out the stock speakers for some Eminannce Red, White, and Blues because the stock speakers in the Frontman series are just plain horrible. Next, instead of relying on the DSP effects, get yourself the Zoom John 5 Signature Series Effects Processor. They're only $60.00 and for the price, are the best sounding pedal out there today. Much better than Digitech's RP series and will blow away the DSP effects on those Frontman amps.

Re: Fender Frontman DSP... tell me about them.

i was just jamming thru a smaller Frontman model amp at a local store... i kind of liked what i was hearing... great practice amps for the bedroom in many ways...

if you play in a band and have some extra money i'd say try and get a better amp... if it's just for the bedroom it may do the job...

if you want PF style cleans the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe is the sort of thing you may want to look at... try and save for that
