Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

hey. does anyone know how this amp sounds? i think i'd like a tube amp :) . i'll probably be mic-ing it so the 40w will be enough. how is the overdrive/distortion sound? are there any better tube amps at this price range? $500-700?

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

its a nice amp for fender cleans. 40 w is more than enough, class A tube power, even 30 w is enough, and for the largest gigs, grab a 2X12 or mic it. the od/distortion is not soo good, in fact, it downright stinks. its fine for light stuff, but for metal or anything other than light blues, it is bad. the amp is known for great cleans, and bad od chanell. a good od/distortion pedal would solve that problem tho

other amps to check out. peavey classic 30 (or 50), peavey delta blues, crate vintage club 30 (or 50, or vintage series), used marshall dsl401, and more. im assuming u want a 30-50 watt combo? if u want used, its a whole new can of beans, there are tons of options, what soundsdo u want, what styles do u play?

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

If you want a good clean sound at a decent price it's a good option. Like BluesNRock said it's not a great amp for distortion.

But then, if you mainly want a great clean sound you can always put a good OD pedal in front of the amp. In this case it's a good option.

I use a single channel Fender, and it sounds great with the right pedals.

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

a peavey classic 50. The best value for an amp. It has great cleans and good overdrive stock, plus with a few cheap and easy mods as well as a speaker change, it sounds amazing all around. Much better features than any other amp in its price range. Be sure to check it out, could be had for under $400 used.

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

well i play blues and classic rock. sometimes metal(metallica)... but i'm not too into metal so i guess the amp doesn't need THAT great of a distortion sound. i play a lot of incubus and red hot chili peppers though. led zepplin. rock and roll and such. peavy classic 50? under $400 used!!! nice price!!! i have to go and check how that sounds! but where would i get mods or speaker changes?

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

I just gigged with my HRD Saturday night and I couldn't be happier. I think the amp's drive channel is sufficient for any heavier stuff I play even with out my pedals. I only use my distortion, fuzz and O/D for a couple of songs. One last thing, don't think for a moment that 40 watts might not be loud enough, this amp is LOUD. With the volume on 4 it's sterilizing everyone within 25 feet. :)

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

which one sounds better? Peavey Classic 50/410 Amplifier with EFX or DSL 401 or Fender Hot Rod Deluxe? i have my mind set on one of these...

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

I have the Peavey Classic 30. With the JJ Eurotubes and a Celestion Greenback in a seperate cabinet, this little amp screams. The distortion (depending how you set the pre and post knobs) will get you into the Zepplin/Cream territory. Not identical mind you, but of that flavor. For heavier things I use a Tonebone Hot British thru the clean channel. This will get you into the Van Halen territory.

Actually,
I think the Traynor ycv40 sounds better than all of them. The DSL is a tad overpriced. The hot rod deluxe sound nice clean, but the overdrive blows. It is thin and tinny. The classic is IMO the best of that bunch you mentioned, but the Traynor ycv40 is better than them all. More versatile. Great clean, great overdrive, great warranty. 40 watts class A; loud! Also, do yourself a favor and check out an Ibanez Toneblaster 100 watt combo (TB100R). It is only $350 and sounds incredible for a SS. Don't laught at the fact it is Solid State. After hearing it, i decided to get a local guitar store (which didn't normally carry them) order one for me. The dude there was no impressed with it (and the price) that he ordered 3 half-stacks (a steal at $550 apiece).

But,
if you are stuck on an all-tube combo, i would go traynor.

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

you can get a used hot rod off ebay for $350 or so, i know, its how i got mine, hehe

it'll give you a nice fuzz, or a toxic dose of crunch, if you want nice smooth distortion with lots of sustain you'll need a pedal tho.

i have no expirience with the peaveys so i can't tell you about them
