Fender Hot Rod DeVille 4x10... any good?

I've been offered this amp used in great condition and for what I think's a good price... so I'd like to ask the owners of this amp or any of the Hot Rod series how happy they are... or not!

How good are they soundwise and roadwise... are there any good mods to make'em sound more like boutique amps?

I've been using modeling amps for the past five years and I'm not used to real tube sound anymore... the guy's asking for 60 cents on the dollar for it, so would it be worth it?

I'm all ears, guys!

Excellent sounding cleans. Nice Super'verb breakup at volume. An amazing amp for the price IMO>
There are some modifications available to address some relibilty concerns. Anyone using this amp for distortion needs their head examined. 60 big sparkly effervescent chimey Fender watts!
I say shes a winner!

They're good amps, very loud and have a ton of headroom. I used one for years and had nary a problem. Pretty good with pedals.

I agree w/the above. It does take pedals well, which is good, because. IMHO, the drive channels are not so good. Clean is great.

I've played through Hot Rods before, and am in the same boat as others. I once tried it with an English Muff'n (a tube OD pedal) providing the dirt and it gave a great ballsy distortion tone, much better than the amp's on-board drive. I'd say go for it, but I'd also reccomend getting a tube OD if you're gonna turn to dirt boxes.

There's so much circuitry in those amps that seems to never get used by anyone anywhere, I'd save your money for when one of these comes along...

I promise it'll do better Fendery goodness than any of the Hot Rod series, and it'll take pedals better, too...:werd:

The 4x10 DeVille is my favourite in the Hot Rod line. The clean is gorgeous ... somewhere between a tweed Bassman and a blackface Super Reverb. The drive and more drive channels are good too as long as you use the gain in moderation. If you set the Drive to give you a bit of grit and the More Drive to give you a light crunch, you'll be pretty pleased. Use pedals to get more gain if necessary. A retube goes a long way too.

I have the hot rod blues deluxe, and it's exactly what the above posts say it will do. Epic cleans, but make sure you got a few good pedals in your arsenal.

Re: Fender Hot Rod DeVille 4x10... any good?

love these things for the clean tone.... i don't like any of the HR line for Overdive tones... But i'd buy one for use with my Pedalboard if it was cheap!!!

the down side to those 4x10's is the weight!!!! for gigging amps i'd get some wheels for them somehow... maybe a 4 wheel cart to place it on to haul in and out of clubs
