Fender Hot Rod Deville

: private:Anyone own this amp and use it for multiple genres? I'm looking at ways i may be able to modify this with tubes and a speaker to pull off Jazz and hard rock/heavy metal - if it is possible at all? I've tried a bunch of amps (bogner/orange/mesa boogie) in the last year and I am frustrated with price/sound ratio, and the Fender Hot Rod seems to be a staple among gigging musicians I've seen. I could really use the help!

Thanks in advance.

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deville

dude, this amp will definitely do it for you. even better is the deville. i don't give a darn what people say because the overdrive is kick ass on the deville and sounds darn good. you can get a lot of tones from jazz to hard rock. with the gain at max, you can do metallica with the amp distortion. you won't get lamb of god or anything, but it's very versatile.

with pedals, you can get a really really great tone. you have to give these amps a chance though. i recorded a lot of material using these amps and didn't really realize how good they were until i went back several months later and dug up that old material. they do have a very good quality sound.

if you can afford it, go with the deville. some people will tell you that it's the same as the deluxe but with more wattage and two or four speakers, but that's not true in my experience. there is a difference in tone and i prefer the deville. the hot rod has a particular tone that is also very satisfying. it's very similar to the deville and you may not even notice a difference. in any case, they're very good amps. get your pedal arsenal hooked up and you're off to neverland man

You're saying to get the hot rod deville? If you run a quality distortion or overdrive, do you have a noise problem at all? Is the fx loop quiet? I am excited if this amp will work for my application as I am really really frustrated with the price and quality of the many options I have. I don't really get much setup time and need something that can bring it! And when I say bring it, it has to be quiet because if it ain't - I'll suffer. I play in old places in Chicago that have a lot of dirty electricity and it comes thru in droves!

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deville

yeah, i personally think the deville sounds just a little better. i didn't have any problems with noise or anything. this amp doesn't have a problem pushing a 4x12 cab either. you'll have everything you need with pedals. in fact, you can usually walk out of guitar center with a brand new deville for $600. always make sure to ask what's the best price they can give you. if you just accept sticker price, they won't hessitate to give it to you. then again, they don't want to see you walk out, so drive a bargain.

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deville

yeah the hot rod deville is an amazing amp. i dont know if you can get heavy metal out of it but hard rock you could easily pull off. and i mean clean jazz tones....its a fender, you will def get that.

combine the amp itself with the plethera of OD/DIST pedals out there and im sure you can pull off whatever you want. thats why i love fender amps. i have mine set really clean and then get all the OD/DIST i want from pedals and it sounds great.

i play through a super reverb which is amazing but i dont play heavy rock or metal. buddy of mine in a band uses a hot rod deville though and its friggin awesome. really versatile too

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deville

get the 2x12 and put in 1 emi swamp thang and 1 celestion v30

then put JJ 12at7's in v1 & v2, and a 12ax7 in the PI

then get your 6l6's of choice

then buy pedals

done.

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deville

I played an amp similar( regular deville, 40 watts, 1x12)Ive played this version too, I loved the cleans, The dirty cleans in the middle ground. It goes from squeeky clean, to shaking the floor to hell dirty. Im sure if you pop out those speakers you could rock it until you need a new set of tube because Groove Tubes kinda sound weird, but overall their sound rips.

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deville

i've been looking ta these Devilles myself... yes lots of gigging musicians use them around here... i want one for it's clean channel... i have a few rigs and one of them i use pedals as my source of distortion so all i need is a good solid loud clean tone... and the Deville offers that.... i'm still sticking with me Classic 30 and Classic 50 amps for now but the Deville may or may not be one of my next amps... i'm also looking at DSL Marshalls...

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deville

yeah they're speakers, i probably should have mentioned that

and yeah the deluxe comes with a 50 watt speaker, and cranked a deluxe puts out way more than 50 watts, so that speaker farts out & sounds terrible

with a deville 2x12 you should have no problems though, especially with new speakers

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deville

i was, in fact, referring to the 2x12. i think they have fender proprietary speakers, but they sounded good to me. maybe you can improve the tone with new speakers, but that defeats the purpose of trying ot get a good amp at a good price. they sound fine the way they are IMO.

i've hear complaints about the overdrive, but i like it a lot. the clean channel is very good, but maybe not as good as those expensive botique fenders. that's to be expected though because they cost 10x as much.

the deville is a great amp and excellent value for the money. it's versatile enough to do any kind of music with a pedal. if you can't afford that, go with the deluxe. that's a good amp too and probably as versatile.

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deville

A friend of mine down the road has one, and it's loud as H**L! The overdrive might seem a tad fizzy, but it's not a problem in a band situation. If all you want is a GREAT clean amp to run pedals into, save twice the coin and go for either a new Super
Reverb, or find a good used Pro Reverb...I played a '78 Pro Reverb at one show that made me look around every few minutes to grin like a kid with a new toy.:fest6:

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deville

Quick question - I just picked up the amp. I really like the cleans, for my application. It is a very loud amp! I am more of a rock/hard rock player tho. I bought the Fender Hot Rod amp because of the value! If I were to invest a little more, would I get more bang for my buck with power tubes or a new spearker? If speaker anyone know what ohms I should purchase. The fender website indicates 2 or 4 ohms, but when I look at the celestion vintage 30 I don't see that as an option.

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deville

This is a very stupid question but I'm confused, why are therer different color tubes? And why are they more expensive? Case in point Svetlana 6l6s?

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deville

colors like on the labels? sometimes its just the company logo, and sometimes they're like a rating scale, groove tubes uses colors like that

anyhoo, a new speaker will change your tone more, tubes are kind of a fine tuning thing.

like in relation to a guitar, a new speaker will be like putting in new pickups, and new tubes will be like putting on new strings

you got the deluxe though, 1x12, correct? it's an 8 ohm amp

how are you EQing your amp? what tones do you like? this'll help us figure out what speaker to reccomend

for instance... okay take into consideration the deluxe speaker farts out & gets WAAAY muddy if you crank it too high

but if you're keeping your bass kinda low, crankin the mids, and keepin the treble around halfway i'd reccomend a v30 or eminence governor

but if you're keepin the bass kinda high, mids around half, and treble around half, i'd go with an eminence governor

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deville

I got the hot rod deville 2X12 - I'd like a tighter bottom end and a goog mid rang punch while retaining the chimmey sound of the clean if it is possible.

Re: Fender Hot Rod Deville

Drew half empty many thanks! But what ohms do I get? I'm always confused by that, I' been a combo amp person for a long time - but never have had to get replacement speakers. I don't get the 2 or 4 ohms posted on the fender site.
