I have a Fender Jazz Bass 24 with Bassline pickups (actve electronics only/ no passive channel). When I solo either pick up it s very noisey, with blend centered it has no noise. What can I do to get rid of this? Also, does anybody know which model of pick up this is. I am not opposed to going passive. Thanks, Vern

welcome to the forum!

it sounds like the two pups themselves are passive single coil pups and there is an active preamp. each pup by itself is susceptible to hum, when they are both on then they cancel hum due to being rw/rp from each other

Re: Fender Jazz Bass 24 W/ Basslines

Bassists of a certain age expect a Jazz Bass to have individual volume pots per pickup. The majority of the instrument's best sound involve having one pickup up full and the other pickup backed off a little. In these circumstances, most of the hum will be cancelled.

This bass has Quarter-Pound pick ups with an EMG BEQ3 preamp. Some of these J24's had a Volume push/pull that would make it passive. Is there a way to add a push/pull volume and bypass the preamp. I love the passive sound of the J Bass but it is nice to have the preamp for some music. I have attached the wiring diagram I received from Fender. Thanks for your help. Vern

Vern,
Welcome to the forum! As Jeremy articulated, you have two non hum-cancelling (traditional single coil) pickups. Depending on environmental circumstances (clean power, florescent lighting,..), single coils are noisy, to one degree or another. Some folks put up with the noise in favor of the great single coil sound. Others choose hum-cancelling pickups to which, in 2012, there are some very good ones to choose from. Quarter Pounders are single coils, so they are susceptible to noise. What kind of tone are you going after? Do you play in really (power) noisy places? Can you live with the noise or not?
