Re: Fender Jazz Bass vs Precision Bass

Turn off the bridge pickup and a Jazz can do a passable P impression. A P can't do that.

One bass for recording- I'd do a Jazz.

I like my Jazz bass. But Lew, you might want to look into the G&L L2000 (either a Tribute or an American made -- depending on your budget). Those things should nail most of the tones you should need. Here's a pretty extensive review of the L2000 Tribute: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WT4AP58jC5o

I like the Fender Jazz Special, you get the best of both worlds.

P/J pickup config w/active circuit, Jazz neck, Precision body, MIJ

I've always liked those as well. I have an old Kramer that's the same way.

Re: Fender Jazz Bass vs Precision Bass

Same old story...
One mans clear is another mans thin!

J basses are cool but nothing sounds bigger and meaner (in old school terms) that a good P bass...

All this said, my next bass is gonna be a NON Split P style...those are mean sounding basses...

my bass player has a bass with two single coil p style pups, a vintage style in the normal spot and an oversized magnet one where a jazz bridge pup would be. the tone is wonderful. keep just the middle pup on and its classic early 50's p tone, warm but can be aggressive when you lay into it. dialing in a little bridge gets some nice jazz bass style growl but with a deeper tone thats still tight on the lowest note.

Re: Fender Jazz Bass vs Precision Bass

tough call.

i like the P bass thump but prefer the Jazz bass comfort... id go jazz.

i algo have a PJ-bass, the "mutt" described above... those are great.

Re: Fender Jazz Bass vs Precision Bass

I like both so I own a CIJ Aerodyne bass. I like the beefy P-Bass necks better than the thinner Jazz style though. I'd probably be pretty content with just a P-Bass if it came down to it. Jazz basses are fun to mess around with slapping on, but I'm a very basic bass player, so I like doing simple grooves and feel a precision pickup just gives a very big, fat and aggressive sound that fits for my style.

Any audio examples of this? Sounds interesting.

P-Bass. thick, meaty, feels great, sounds great. fantastic with roundwounds and amazing with flats.
