fender lace sensors

I have a 92 strat plus deluxe which has red, silver and blue lace sensors . I do not seem to get that lovely Knopfleresque sound on posn 2 . Is this normal for lace sensors . Do I need to change to more conventional pickups , and if so what would you recommend?? Guitar is a beauty otherwise and stays in tune perfectly , even with heavy trem use.

Re: fender lace sensors

Certain Lace sensor models are better than others. The Holy Grail and Hot Gold models are really nice and very Strat-like. If you want to stay with noiseless pickups, the Bill Lawrence 280S and Kinman AVN series are very nice as well. If you want to go with traditional single coils, someone else will have to help you with that, I have no experience with Duncan single coils.

Re: fender lace sensors

It's a compromise.

I've used the fender coloured laces and the s100's. They have a workable tone but they lack the bite and tonal variation of true single coils.

I think that most signature fenders which used to come with laces, no longer carry laces. That somes it up for me.

BTW, try a Duncan SSL-1 in the neck and middle. Most people luv them. If for some reason you don't like them, there are 200 blokes here on these boards alone that would buy em' off you

Re: fender lace sensors

I had Fender Gold Lace Sensors in my Strat Plus and while it was a nice sounding pickup, there was kind of a 'falseness' to the sound that I didn' really like.

I swapped mine out for a set of the Seymour Duncan Antiquity Texas Hot strat pickups and haven't looked back :) They sound exactly like (I think) a Strat should sound. They may be worth a try........

Re: fender lace sensors

for that knopfler tone id get a set of the ssl1's
i agree that while some humcancelling strat pups sound good, they dont sound like i think a strat should. if you want really great strat tone. shield your guitar well and deal with a little hum

Re: fender lace sensors

I think you need true singles for the Knopfler sound. All the low noise Strat replacements I've tried (Virtual Vintage, Lace Sensors, EMG Dave Gilmour set) don't have the high end complexity of true singles
