how good is it for classic hard rock/powermetal stuff ??? thanks.

I all ive heard is a demo, soundclips..

Sounded like a line6 (insane sound) on steroids.

To be honest in the video demo and sound clips i thought it sounded crap.

people who gave it great reviews are probably too broke to afford a good amp. It looks like fender is trying to do the over the top gain with massive amounts of power that sounds like crap thing like randall and line 6. A used 5150 would be MUCH MUCH BETTER. Hell, I thought my marshall sounded pretty good at one time.......

I've played them numerous times. They are complete and utter crap, you buy one of those and I'll hafta smack you lol. The WORST sounding gain I have ever heard!

Powermetal?

Get yourself a Marshall Jmp-1 based rack or a Peavey 5150 and you pretty much have the "Ultimate" sound.

Both amps sound very different (obviously the Jmp-1 depends on what poweramp you couple it with) but are perfect for the job.

Jmp-1 users.. off the top of my head. Iron Maiden, Slipknot, Dragonforce.
Peavey 5150 users.. Every big band in metal pretty much uses or atleast has used 5150's... Personall favourites of mine being Arch enemy, In Flames and Machinehead.

The important point here is that they are "****ing awesome" at the highest level amps, but affordable, Marshall Jmp-1's go for peanuts on ebay, couple that with say a Carvin TS100 poweramp and away you go, Peavey 5150 probably cost you around the same ( i dunno what they go for in the usa/canada whatever).

Anyway, from what ive heard of the fender metal head it has a good clean channel and its loud as hell but the gain sounds are terrible (i havent played one in real life, just heard the clips and saw a video demo).. Its comparable to a marshall mode 4, but the marshall is better, though still nothing special itself (again its selling point is that its loud with lots of clean headroom).

Well id say the fireball would have a heck of a better clean sound cos the 5150 clean sound isn't that crash hot. The 5150's are great sounding amps, but if you can get an ENGL id suggest that cos they really have a character about them and can get as nasty as you want them to!

If you want beautiful cleans and crushing distortion, try a Mesa V-Twin. Feed that into a Mesa 50:50 through a nice 4x12 cab, and you're there for not a lot of cash (if you buy used).

Hey now let's not be raggin' on the Randalls.... I happen to like mine a lot... that's assuming you don't know I'm trying to get my hands on a Peavey Triple XXX :P

When I tried out the Fender MetalHead for a half hour at one store I hated it... cleans were decent at best, but the distortion sounded like crap. It would be ok if you didn't care that much about a great sound, but I would stay away. On the upside, apparently you actually do get a free pair of earplugs when you buy it :bigok:

I assume that 50:50 is a poweramp and V-Twin is a tube head right ? sorry not very familliar with Mesa product.Thanks

The 50:50 is a poweramp, yes, but the V-Twin is a tube preamp pedal that has channel switching.

BTW ksmith63, what is that glowing pickup in your avatar?

I think the Metalhead was meant to be the loudest amp, period. You can hook up an indefinite amount of them together and just use the volume control from the first one...kinda leads to that kind of mentality.

fullshred. some guy on ebay has tons of glow in the dark duncans. search function: 'seymour duncan glow'. I'd have them in my ibanez if it wasn't antique violin sunburst or any other color that would make it look like crap.

I dunno about the mesa thing, used a 50/50 poweramp alone(here in uk atleast) would cost probably twice (or more) what the Jmp-1 rack full setup would cost.

Just thinking if you was looking at the metal head then you were looking for something low budget..

Mesa is hardly low budget. lol.

Personally i think a mesa rect is bland compared to a 5150.

You're forgetting I'm in the land of the free, the home of the brave. :)

Here in the US, I can get a V-Twin/50:50 rig used for around $800USD pretty much all the time. Add an Avatar 4x12 stereo cab, and you're somewhere around the $1300 mark. If you ask me, that's not a lot of money for a 3 channel full tube 100 watt rig that sounds totally pro.

Here, just the JMP and Marshall 50/50 power section puts you close to $1200 (on average). That still leaves you looking for a cab.

BTW, the V-Twin doesn't sound like a Recto. It's actually quite nice. :burnout:

Ok, I played with JCM 900 for 2 years and with JCM 2000 for three years, and then took a 5 year break which as you can see I am back from. So, those two heads are my entire amp experience, they satisfied most of the requirements but now I have a tone in my head that partialy my invader hum strat satisfies, I am realy after the bright middle with clarity during single note palm muted riffs and thick pick harmonics my rythm tone is somewhere between eghties Iommi and Zakk Wylde with single note riffs and pick harmonics of Lynch, Malmsteen, Helloween, now this is the best way I can describe it don't take it this examples litteraly just to give you an idea. Now, the question, considering the tone I am after what are the pluses and minuses of over drive tube pedal and power amp (V-twin and 50/50) vs. tube head engle, laney, marshall, mesa, etc. with some sort of pedal ? thanks
