fender MIA strat

I just decided that I need a fender strat :D
I 've been browsing through some second hand guitars and was wondering, is there a year of manufacture that I should avoid?

So far I 've found strats (MIA standard) from 93, 97, 99 and 08... which one would be the best judging by the year only? (I know I should play it before I buy it, but an indication would be helpfull :))

Re: fender MIA strat

I hear the 00's and up are the best.

Our local gray haired luither said he'd rather play (for tone) a 00s guitar instead of the older ones.

Also said nitro and poly has doesn't have that difference in tone. It just ages well.

I wish you well on your quest.

Thx for the input :)

Anyone else have some info?

Re: fender MIA strat

I have 12 MIA strats.....yes, I went a little overboard during my strat phase but was picking them up for $400-$600 at every corner a few years back. I bought alot of HSS Lonestar strats and some SSS standards and converted them into HSS. A few I left stock. The years range from 91' to 05'. The one that stands out above the bunch is a black 97' with a maple neck. It's so comfortable and well put together. I don't think you'll go wrong with any of those years. The 00' and up have the rolled fingerboard edges, thats a pretty nice touch. I like them all but find myself drawn to the 97's............

Re: fender MIA strat

any year can be a good year of course no matter what they are made off... but the 93 could be a poplar body MIA strat... but it may be one hell of a strat! I don't mind poplar but Fender went thru a phase of using a lot of poplar in the MIA line because of a shortage of alder......

but out of all those years i would have to say the 08 would be the first place i'd look if i had a choice of the 4... Fender has been making some nice axes of late...

before i got my Custom Shop strat my number 1 strat was a beat to snot 1988 American Standard!

Re: fender MIA strat

Ok, I 'll avoid the '93 :)
Problem with the 08 is that I have to buy it new :D
Thx for the info...

i don't mean to avoid the 93... it may very well be the best strat out of them all... take it on a strat by strat bases... good luck...

some people dislike the mid 90's era of MIA Strats...

Re: fender MIA strat

ah... misunderstood :)
also have to see what the rolled fingerboard is all about... never heard of it

they just take the sharp edge off the fingerboard... MIM strats fingerboard edge is left sharp... the MIA line has the edges slightly rounded to feel more like a worn in neck

Re: fender MIA strat

I have a 93 Strat Plus...it is a great gtr, and I've owned a few Strats from the 70s and 80s. The neck is very sweet, w/excellent action.

Granted it it's a Plus, not a Standard, FWIW. It also came w/Fralin pups, which helps my opinion of it.

Re: fender MIA strat

My first and up till now only strat is a 00 MiM Strat and I must say that I've yet to find a more acoustically loud and full sounding guitar (in a Strat shape of course!!!).

As for the rounded edges, my strat's edges are rounded but I fail to recall if they always were that way or they got like that from me playing it to death :9:

Re: fender MIA strat

I have an MIA Strat from the '00 or '01, and it's excellent. I've played a lot of new Strats since the early '90s, and this one is pretty close to being everything I think a Strat should be. The latest new ones are better, though.
