Fender Mustang Bass - Opinions

I'd like to try out some bass eventually and this looks like something I'd enjoy. A while back I thought about getting the Squier Bronco but was put off by the thin body.
What do you think? 999 is a bit more than the Squier but I think the quality will be too.

One more thing, MF says it's a limited reissue. Anyone noticed when these came out or know how long they are usually available? I'd rather not spend so much money right now but after checking ebay I'd end up paying the same for a used instrument (after taxes and shipping, of course). Then again it might be a mistake by MF (anyone can confirm or deny this?).

In essence, worth it or not?

I like the antique white, especially when compared to the red one (it looks cheap to me) and the tort would match my Cyclone altough I'm a black perloid fan (didn't change the cyclone because the tort matched the copper metallic finish).

Re: Fender Mustang Bass - Opinions

They are really good basses the large bridge plate helps the tone and they can be very versatile. Quality wise this is much better than Squire it's a great bass for a good price I know a lot of very accomplished bass players who use these all the time. Even Bootsy Collins uses one now and again.

Re: Fender Mustang Bass - Opinions

One of my first basses was a Musicmaster, I had a fretted and fretless, awesome little basses short scale, which worked out well.

Small, lightweight, and punchy.

Re: Fender Mustang Bass - Opinions

Ok, I'm getting the distinct impression you guys approve. If no one comes up with a good reason not to get it I'm heading out to my store tomorrow and see what they can do about finding out when Fender is stopping production.
I could buy one right now but in a couple of months my contract is up and I don't what to gamble like this on a bass.

Re: Fender Mustang Bass - Opinions

Another thing to note in that vintage photograph of B_M_05 - replacement pickup!

There's all kinds of awesome going on in this picture. MLB sheets, Fender bass, Vinyl, and what looks like a payphone.

btw, LSP, I approve of the bass.

Buy it now it isn't a gamble.
I meant in the sense that I might need the money eventually due to loss of job and the bass might still be around for a year or so, not in the sense of not knowing if it's a dud or not.

As far as pup's go I'll give the stock a try but I might add a Jazz in the bridge if I want some more versatility out of it tough people have used P's and got tons of sounds out of them.

Are they not National League sheets, I can see Expos, Giants and Phillie's logos as well

Re: Fender Mustang Bass - Opinions

Yeah, I'm old lol! The hat is official MLB from "Pops" Willie Stargil, my father was friends with the owners back in the late 70-80s. This was actually my friends house, and yes those are a sh*t load of vinyl. His parents put in a payphone to curb the calls, hey it was only 10 cents. And good caught on the P/U's, I wish I had all my old basses.
