Fender Pawn Shop 72 = Want

I finally got to try out the new 72 Pawnshop, which is a cross between a thinline Tele and a humbucker strat. Crafted in Japan, excellent neck, and very toneful pickup combo which is switched using pan pot setup and a volume. That means you can roll the knob toward either pickup or blend them. The nicely bound F hole is a nice touch too.

It's really clear, bright, and airy sounding, but has so much definition that it sounds huge through a fat sounding amp. I even cranked it through a Soldano Avenger halfstack and it's stock bridge bucker sounded great, and even fatter if you mix a tiny bit of Wide Range neck into it. I can tell it would make a nice test bed for Duncan bridge pickups.

At $700-800 it's not a steal, but it is a well made Fender that sounds and plays great. I'm not in the market for spending right now, but I may think about parting with some other toys to make room for this one in sunburst.
I like it a lot.

I saw those. They look pretty sweet. I didn't know they were made in Japan. With a price that's comparable to the Mexican stuff, that should be a no brainer, unless the Jap quality has come down.

Re: Fender Pawn Shop 72 = Want

The neck was great. It's like a fat 60's tele neck with medium jumbo frets.

The blender pot w/detent would take some getting used to, since we're all used to switches, but that wouldn't take long. As a matter of fact, this guitar is great for rhythm, since you've got every tone between the humbucker and Wide Range.
The Fender Enforcer sounded good enough to keep, but I'm sure I could dial this guitar in with the perfect Duncan.

As soon as I'd started bonding with this guitar, my wheels were spinning about which guitars or mics I have for sale.

Fender Japan quality has IN NO WAY GONE DOWN. they make some amazing guitars I would proudly gig with any day.

However: I found the 72 uninspiring. The 51 is a much more interesting concept to me.

oddly alluring! lots going on there to keep your eyes busy - the chamber, weird pickguard, cool chrome control area, nice burst, the odd p/up combo. pan pot - more gits should have those, ya know?!, instead of a useless "tone" pot!

There are sellers on the bay with plates made for those guitars (originally for the '51) that have an offset slot for a switch so you can have a tone control.
The spinning pickup selection thing is a no go for me, even though I'm gassing for a '72 myself.

Apart from it being the wrong way around, I think it's friggin' awesome.

Re: Fender Pawn Shop 72 = Want

Is I6 getting royalties for this? ;)

Re: Fender Pawn Shop 72 = Want

I love that guitar... if I had the $$$ right now that would be the same guitar I would be buying (diff color tho)...

Re: Fender Pawn Shop 72 = Want

This is a real forum dividing guitar. I agree that it has a really odd mishmash look, and normally I don't like guitars like that. I think that's why I was curious enough to try it out. And then, I actually liked it.

The only thing I don't like is the 70's style non-sealed tuners. But the neck is great. I wish all my Fenders had a neck just like it.....with the proper headstock.

I think these are awesome. I don't know if there's one I'd particularly buy, but they are super cool. I like that they're trying something new yet vintage looking. Pawn Shop Series is a good name because they look like mutts that someone made from parts of different guitars.
