The Fender Dual Showman is a great amp. It's loud loud loud!!! It's very clean too. They were a head/cabinet config and about 100 watts. Don't get one if you're going to try and get it to break up at a high volume. You'll just end up blowing the ceiling off wherever you are...
BS123 is correct. A showman is a Great Amp. It is essentially a Twin in a head configuration. IF you do plan on buying one get the sowman w/ Reverb. It is an odd looking head, about half the height of a twin. Very Loud and very Clean. If you want to hear what it sounds like Clapton used this Amp on the Derik & the Dominos LIVE album.
I would recommend the Deluxe. For most Club situations the Deluxe will be hard to beat. 22 Watts, it will begin to break up at about 3 up to about 7, any higher than 7 it tends to get muddy. If you need more volume the Pro or Super Reverb (both are 40 watts)would also be good choices.
Does the Showman have a Bright option, presence, or some kind of boost feature? Is there a lower wattage switch? It sounds like what I want, because my guitar teacher has a Fender Twin, and the tone on that is sweet.
You could also track down an early 90's Prosonic head for around $550.
Those had nice clean channels, and one of the best gain channels Fender ever came out with. They also had a selector switch for Tube or SS rectifiers.
Heh yeah those Prosonics heads where very nice, that said....I borrowed a bf Showman head for a few gigs......it is like a Twin without the reverb.
I used it with a Park 4X12 cab with 25 watts greenbacks in....yesssssss
big clean big headroom big juicy overdrivesounds from my pedals....loved it tons.
I'm looking for the Fender with THE MOST pristine cleans. I will be overdriving it with pedals, so I will have no need for an OD channel. Thanks for the suggestions though, fellas! Much appreciated.
So far I've narrowed it down to several amps:
Red Knob Dual Showman
Dual Showman (with or without reverb)
Super 112 (Red knob)
"Evil Twin" (IF I can find one)
Prosonic (Again, if I can find one)
are you sure it was a twin? There loud as **** and don't really break up easily. especialy the late 70's ones. There even louder. Or did it have a master volume?
In regards to the 80's ones with the red knobs and separate distortion channel...how do they sound compared to the others? If I had to guess, I'd say the additional channel might take away from the cleans?
