Fender Stratocaster Modern Player ?

Read the reviews, listened to the demos. Seems like a worth it buy as I'd like an HSS Stratocaster. Opinions or first hand experience anyone?

Re: Fender Stratocaster Modern Player ?

The Modern Player series is absolutely amazing! They've got great playability, decent stock economy pickups, Ect.!!! However the electronics aren't the best & the Pine bodies are not as durable as other Fender products so if you bang or drop it you'll probably end up with a ding?

I've owned several of Modern Player solid bodies & all of them were well worth what I paid for them. If you throw some Duncan's in it eventually, & perhaps re-build the harness with better quality components, you'll end up with a really nice guitar for about the same as you'd pay for a MIM.

My vote is go for it!!!

Like everything but the pine body part, never heard of a guitar with a pine body...more like speaker cabinet or casket material.

I've played a few and I'm not a fan. They feel mismatched in some way to me. The necks are decent but they don't feel like they fit with the body in some way. A lot of the lower end guitars have the same feel to me for some reason, even in blind tests.

Re: Fender Stratocaster Modern Player ?

Pine was used for the first Teles. Other conifer materials make excellent guitars - spruce and acoustic guitars for example.

So there is nothing misplaced about pine bodies except for preconceptions.

Here's a Pine Tele video...the guitar sounds pretty good to me.

A balsa guitar would sound good through a Hot Rod Seville:14:

I believe I tried one of those Hot Rod amps at my local music store. It had a red tolex covering and the amp sounded pretty wicked. I almost wanted to buy it but my funds were insufficient at the time.

Re: Fender Stratocaster Modern Player ?

As someone related to forest industry: Pine (like softwoods generally) is significantly "spongier" than alder or even basswood. in good and in bad, not mushy at all though, and not as spongy as spruce. Tonewise, I'd imagine it to be like alder, but with slightly softer attack.

Of course this is just a speculation. But I'm sure it is great for guitar building!

Re: Fender Stratocaster Modern Player ?

They're made in China. Essentially a Squier with a Fender logo on it.

Re: Fender Stratocaster Modern Player ?

Do they really make Fenders in China now? Why don't they just call it Squier then?

No matter the quality, it's hard to think a better way to wash down brand-name...

Re: Fender Stratocaster Modern Player ?

These are discontinued guitars? I couldn't find any of these on sale even from ebay? How much worth these are used or new?

Re: Fender Stratocaster Modern Player ?

Sweetwater still carries them
$499

Telecasters? I couldn't find any Modern Player Stratocaster there. Or was this topic about Teles instead Strats what OP asked about?

I never heard before about pine bodied strats...

The strats have been discontinued. They were alder.. I had one. They are not bad guitars for the money, for a starter. CHEAP electronics.

My general feelings about it... I wasn't fond of the pickups and the excessive gloss on the neck, and the frets were a little small for my liking...Changed out all the electronics. Sanded the neck down for a satin feel. I never did quite gel with it. I sold it and don't miss it at all.
