Fender Super Sonic - NICE!!

Re: Fender Super Sonic - NICE!!

Many thought the SS was going to be a modernized Prosonic. That was not the case the SS is more"civilized" and user friendly. There is MUCH less gain smoother crunches and more clean headroom on the SS. The Prosonic is more raw in your face and aggressive. There is more gain in my Prosonic at 5 than the SS dimed.
It's not just high gain though the Prosonic is very "organic" and cleans up with the guitar volume quite well. The Prosonic is the most expressive and touch/tecnique responsive amp I have ever played bar none!
Here are a couple of clips with the Prosonic in different situations and un-miced
Outdoors in Florida on my Fender 2/12 with GT12 75 Celestians in the A/B SS rec 60 Watt mode http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=439224&songID=5312459

i can't really testify to the prosonic because it has been years since i tried one of those out, but i can tell you that there is nothing less about the supersonic.

it's just a different amp, but just as good or better compared to the prosonic. one thing i noticed is that at cranked volumes (and this amp can get REALLY loud), it gets a bit more aggressive and gainy. it has its own sound that you can really distinguish from anything else. that's one of hte things i really like aobut it. there's a lot of character there.

it has plenty of gain and dynamics but remains articulate enough even with maxed out distortion. you can do the heaviest metal with this amp as it has plenty of drive, but there's something classy about the tone too so it's going to be quite a bit more organic than what you'd get from say a krankenstein or something.

i wouldn't take anything away from the supersonic compared to ANY other fender amp including the prosonic. i don't think either one is really better than the other. they're both different amps that do different things better than the other. overall, the ss is a very versatile amp with a great tone.

I agree with you on this and may actually wind up at some point buying a SS combo.
However having done a side by side A/B with my Prosonic combo with a SS combo I have no hesitation in saying I prefer the Prosonic in overall tones.
They are quite different amps and both do some things better than the other but overall I just love the unique liquid and expressive Prosonic tones.

likewise, i agree with you. the prosonic is a superb amp IMO. it's too bad they don't make them new any more

Re: Fender Super Sonic - NICE!!

My favorite setting for the SS was one not on the panel. I like to have more volume on tap than I might need, then only use it when the band gets really wound up, so I open it up on the Bassman setting to around 3, then dime the master on the lead channel and open the gains to match the clean side. It's not over poweringly loud, but it'll let me soar out if the band is laying it down really hot. It's not a high gain sound by any means, so a good pedal will do the trick. It IS a superb crunchy channel for the stuff that needs a bit more hair than the Bassman setting will do, and has a very nice low gain blues lead sound. One of Fender's best offerings to date.

I would agree that it has certainly one of the best gain channels of any of the amps Fender has offered. A truly flexible amp.

That said, I haven't heard anything from a SS that would make me want to give up ANY of my five Mesa amps (Maverick, DC-3, Mark III Simul-Class Combo, Mark IV Combo, Mark III Halfstack) for a Supersonic.
