Fender Tex Mex

I never realized how disappointing these pickups are. I installed an old pickguard loaded with them on a semi-temporary basis in one of my Strats; putting them head to head with a couple of my guitars with custom single coils (a couple Rose pickup sets, Stack(s) plus,) they of course sounded less than good in comparison, but...

I made a few recordings to compare them to some really cheap ceramic pickups I have on-hand (Yamaha, Squier, no-name...) And I sort of even prefer those. The only good thing I can say about the Tex Mex set is that they're tighter under gain and have slightly pokier midrange, but overall seems like they were built to not be offensive to people who don't usually play singles, so they have none of the nuance... I'm not saying they're unusable, it even altogether bad, but... They sure sound the worst of the bunch to my ears. Amazed they came in a US Fender.

Well, at least there is no shortage of pickups out there to replace them!

Re: Fender Tex Mex

They're backed off about to the level of the pickguard; I did play with heights. They def. got better lower.

I always found I liked them low. Same thing with the pickups that came in the Highway 1 Strats, which were similar to the Tex Mex pickups. Maybe they're just not your thang. :p
