Fender texas specials compared to tex mex

How different do they sound? I got the texas specials, and looking for just a tad more output and a little less treble. Should the tex mex do the trick? Also could the tex mex bridge pickup mix well with the texas specials in middle and neck?

I dunno if it's bad memory, but I remember the Tex Mex actually being a tad brighter.

Maybe look at some SSL-5s?

Im pretty sure texas specials are the highest output in the fender lineup - which are all variations on vintage output from slightly underwound to overwound.
You might be best served to look at something in the next category of pickups along the lines of the ssl-5 or even hotter.

I'd pass on the Tex Mex, I second the SSL-5 suggestion.

Tex Mex are brighter like Falloffthebonetone said. They also sound grittier to my ear. The Texas Specials have a more scooped and hot character. I think going for Tex Mex would be the wrong direction. I third the SSL-5 or even the flat-staggered SSL-6. To get rid some of the treble, try lowering the treble side of the pickups.

Re: Fender texas specials compared to tex mex

On the fender site the tex mex bridge are rated at 7.5k ohm and the texas special 6.7k. And the treble on the texas special are at 9 and the tex mex at 5. Are you guys sure they are brighter?: popworm:

I have the ssl-3 installed, altough its an awsome pickup I dont like the compression the hotter pickups give and doesent fit with my middle and neck pickup.

I Installed the sh-1 59neck in the bridge of my humbucking guitar, and realised how much better low output pickups sound :)

The SSL-3 is a good deal hotter than the SSL-5.

As far as the ideas behind the pickups go, comparing singles to 'buckers:
SSL-1 -> '59
SSL-3 -> Distortion
SSL-5 -> Custom series
