has anyone here played or owned one? are they made well? i am considering buying one that has been sitting in a closet for a few years. i have only found a few reviews on the net. are the stock pups pretty bad? (bad as in bad)

Re: fender tornado

I've played some and i liked them. If the one that you want to buy is a few years old then it's made or Poplar... I dont know if that matter to you but anyway I like poplar quite a bit. Fender stock pups are usually okay but I'd replace them with Duncans anyway.

Re: fender tornado

cool. what kind of duncan pups can i use? can i put any hb in it? does it have a special pup type like the jazzmaster or the jaguar? btw, the dude who is selling it needs money, so i think i can get it for 100 bucks! he said 150, but i know he will take 100.

. . . here's one type, they used to have a different model too.

Yeah, they used to have three others. I don't know why they disappeared from Fenders site. I guess they just weren't selling well. Which is no wonder. I fell in love with the Toronado the first time I saw it. I went into a couple different "major" guitar stores in different states wanting to see how they played. In all the stores, I was told the same thing: "We don't stock that model because it isn't popular. But will order one if you put down a deposit."

To which I asked, "How do they get popular if you don't stock them?" :yell:

Toronado Butterscotch
Toronado HH
Toronado Highway 1

Yup . . . me too. Especially that "Butterscotch" one. Imagine it with P-90's or Phat Cats. :32:

Re: fender tornado

well, the kid finally dropped it off today. 140$
this thing was in bad shape. it obviously hadnt been played much, the frets look brand new. it is missing two string ferrules, two knobs, and the button for the strap on the neck side. i took it apart, except for the neck and the tuners. it looked like it had something spilled on it. i cleaned it up and put it back together. the vintage style saddles are a little suspect, maybe they are just cheap. the tuners seem to be good. because of the missing string ferrules i could only string the e-g strings. it has good sustain. the pickups arent that great though. they sound like shotty hotrails. im going to replace them for sure.

i have searched for toronado parts on the net, and havent found anything. does anyone know of a place to get parts for this thing? do i just get mustang ferrules? those were all i could find.

by the way, it was made oct 17 1998. it is black with rosewood fretboard and a red shell or gold (not sure) pickguard. it looks good. ill post a pic as soon as i get my camera back.

also, i am not familiar with humuckers. when i took the pickguard off, i noticed that it might be a little harder to change out the pups. harder than installing a strat single coil pup. is that true? i would hate to pay someone to install it. if i successfully replaced the pups in my strat, could i do the same in this toronado? it looks a little harder.
thanks

Look for some Tele string ferrules, they should be the same. Everything on there should be standard Fender parts. They interchange everything.
