Fender Tube Amps to Avoid

Re: Fender Tube Amps to Avoid

I guess my bottom line tone i'm after is close to Gilmour's clean.
I'll be using a strat, with a few stomp boxes.
Would a Twin, Bassman, Deluxe, Vibrolux be the best vehicle to get me into that neighborhood?:reporter:

Well, Gilmore is Hiwatt clean...not exactly a Fender tone, but with some decent Brit-style speakers and a 'robust' 7581A output section, you can get sorta close. Look at Twins/Showmans/Quad Reverbs/80 watt Fenders...it doesn't have to sound like the Buckaroos.

Re: Fender Tube Amps to Avoid

If you are serious about a BACKUP for your Mesa, there's really only one amp to get: a second Mesa, exactly like the one that you have.

It might not be exciting, but that's the amp to get if you want a BACKUP.

Now, if you want to start a collection, that's different.

AVOID all PCB Fender models; that includes the Hot Rod series, the RI series, and everything else except Custom Shop models they've made since the early 90's. Why settle for a Happy Meal when you could have steak?

Well, I would not see the Pro Tube Series as an avoid myself.

Re: Fender Tube Amps to Avoid

i've played a lot of great PCB fenders

and they're all like twice as reliable as current production marshalls, so what's the problem?

Re: Fender Tube Amps to Avoid

I'd buy a Fender from 1951 to about 1974...and avoid the rest! :laugh2:

I don't like those silverface Fenders with master volume controls much...but most can be rebuilt into nicer sounding amps by removing the master volume control and blackfacing them. They're OK if you get them cheap enough.

But I'd avoid the 50 watt Super Reverbs and 100 watt Twin Reverbs and Red Knob Twin Reverbs...although some great players seem to like those red knob Twins...saw Robben Ford using one. They're actualy OK...sort of. Wouldn't own one myself though.

And avoid any solid state Fenders from the 60's like you would avoid the bubonic plague.:smack: HORRIBLE AMPS!

There's a post today about an input jack seperated from the PC board. That repair requires a special part from Fender or AES and maybe you won't lift or break the traces when you replace it. It's a PITA doing even minor repairs...that's the problem. On a tagboard Fender, this is a five minute job that will probably last twenty years. In fact, it probably never would have happened with those designs.

if you just want a small amp to take pedals, get yourself a silverface 50 watt bassman & a 2x12

There ya go... one of the great sleepers of the Fender line. I was browsing through my local GC's used department the other day and they literally had a pile of 50-watt Bassman heads. Blackface, sliverface; take your pick, $500-$600. Makes you wonder if a $1500 Super Reverb is worth it.

bang for the buck I realy like the bassman reissue. With the right pickup that 4 speaker cab just sounds great. Its fairly cheap to get one compared to the glorious amps that everyone wants a million dollars for and truthfully there is not much differance between a good bassman reissue and most of those amps. Another thing I liked was its cleans sounded good from 1.5 all the way up to 5 or 6. If your mikeing it for stage use you wont turn it up that loud anyway. If you put a little compressor peddle infront of it and a little reverb it realy shines. Ask Jeremy on this forum. I think he said he puts a reverb head infront of his?
