Fender Twin HELP!

Me and my band scored a free recording session at a small studio and we are to go into the studio later today. The other guitarist in the band's Mesa Boogie Studio .22 has gone bust so he will borrow his dad's (the mesa is also technically his dad's but he uses it for our band) silverface fender twin. Problem is I'm the technically minded in the band and I've never had experience with a Twin before. What is the best setting in regards to the volume and master controls I'm not trying to get distortion out of it but i want it to have a little bit of tube warmth coming in and to get the best tone out of it possible. Should I keep the master volume on full or near full and adjust the channel volume to acheive loudness or will this mean it has to be kept TOO low for any use.
He is using a fender american 60th anniversary strat if that helps.

Also what is the best way to mic it. I only know about miking single speaker amps. Is it best to put the mic in between speakers or to just concentrate on one?

Any help is extremely appreciated!!

Re: Fender Twin HELP!

Next to an SVT or a Marshall Major, I can't think of a worse amp to use in the studio...get some pedals in front and dial in whatever you can get. You could also pull two power tubes and disconnect one speaker, although that won't help all that much...let the engineer decide how to mike it.

Re: Fender Twin HELP!

I mean it needs to be clean so I don't see how pedals would help. But I agree its too big of an amp for a studio but we don't have any other valve amp to choose from (and no way am I letting him use the **** $200 transistor amp that is there).

Re: Fender Twin HELP!

It should be fine if you want clean---just try and dial in a warmer sound and the engineer can take it from there...

Re: Fender Twin HELP!

Yeah dude, getting a clean tone out of a Twin is about as hard as getting orange juice from a bottle full of orange juice.

Re: Fender Twin HELP!

Yeh well it turned out ok the first song the tone was a bit thin and wimpy so I turned it up and had the mic moved in (its a small studio and the free deal doesnt include a qualified engineer more a trainee well sorta) and moved to the right and took more treble and added more mids and it sounded pretty good. Funny how that when I then played my tele through it i had to turn up the treble a bit and turn down the bass and mids and it was still way warmer and chunkier yet surfy and well alot better but i guess for
1 I like the tone of tele's better and for
2 antiquity 1's show up to be alot better sounding then the stock strat pickups in degree of good tone.
I know its not fair to compare a tele to a strat but it sounded like 10 times better and this is a 60th anniversary strat not some cheap model,
