I own a late 80s Fender Strat(Japan Model)..I don't care what others say about where it was made..damn axe plays/feels/sounds Great!
I came across a 86 Charvel(import-Japan) and was wondering if its the same quality as my MIJ Strat? Worth buying or not? Opinions Please!

Re: Fender Vrs Charvel..???

I had a Charvel model 1 from that time period (actually during that time period!) I thought it was a great guitar. The standard active "Jackson" EMG clone was a little meh, but the guitar was very well built, and the licensed Floyd never failed me.

I sold it because my needs/tastes changed in the early '90s, but for that style of guitar I thought it was very good. I seem to recall it came with an awesome case. Try to find one with it!

If the price is right, go for it.

I may be a bit biased ( I currently have a Charvel Model 4, 2, & 1A ) but I'd say their quality is the same or better than MIJ Fender of the same time period. I'll second the opinion that the stock pickups aren't great; I have SDs in the Model 4 & 1A and I'm planning to install EMGs in the Model 2. I also don't like the fine-tuner location on their JT-6 licensed Floyd, though it held tune quite well.

Bro, don't even doubt it.
Quality is the same, well, I would say it's better, since the Japanese model of a friend of mine had some extra goodies I liked more than in the USA version (which I own).
I did a check, face to face, with the original USA batch #6 (the latest) and a Japanese one.
They play exactly the same, they sound exactly the same (with same pickups).
I would say that Fujigen factory is more accurate in finish, even.
The Japanese version costed 300 EUR less than the USA version and, included a hardcase, while the USA version included a ****ty cardboard case.
I've regret to don't wait for just a month later.

I was lent that Charvel(86 Model #3) last night for a test run. First off..the neck seems to be thinner/faster(nice neck though..) The Jackson Pickups work well for highs..but they seem to be lacking in the Lows & Mids..more geared for the heavy rock end. The guitar has been loved(played) a lot..need a fret job(string buzz)..otherwise it seems OK!
I bought it from her..for $150. I play classic rock & Blues mainly..was thinking about new pickups..how about 2 Fender Texas Specials & SeymoreDuncan "Pearly Gates" Bucker???
Opinions/Ideas Welcome! Thanks to All for their Opinions.

The loss of the Japan facility is very sad indeed, I have two Jackson Dominions built in the Japanese factory and they are stunning instruments. The craftsmanship is impeccable and the materials as well. They both have the most beautiful slabs of ebony I have seen, the mahogany bodies and necks warm and resonant, and the finishing is flawless throughout. That's an awesome deal on a good axe! PGbs sound fantastic in alder strat types and won't overpower your singles. They will also go quite heavy, being gorgeous with distortion.

I had a Charvel from that period. It played great and I never had any issues with it except I didn't like the sterile sounding pickups it came with. Honestly I simply replaced them and the guitar played and sounded great. It's tones with a Floyd Rose were not as sweet as a fender but it was a rocker made for rockin and it did that very well.
