Fender "Wide Range" Humbucker for Telecaster

Does anybody know if there is a Seymour Duncan pickup that compares to the original Fender "Wide Range" pickup introduced in the 70's? I heard it was designed by Seth Lover. Since he had such a close relationship with Mr. Duncan I was wondering if there are any SD pups that are similar in design. Thanks

Apparently, not.

Try Fralin and/or Lollar. Alternatively, buy one of the re-issue WR pickups and have it completely rewound to your requirements.

Re: Fender "Wide Range" Humbucker for Telecaster

The deal with the reissues is they use a standard bar magnet and steel poles instead of the cunife poles the original used. So if you have one rewound you'll end up with a really good sounding humbucker but it won't have that certain character the real ones had.

Re: Fender "Wide Range" Humbucker for Telecaster

I agree with Parameter Man. You could have the re-issues re-wound with asymmetrical coils to simulate the bright-yet-balanced tone of those things. With two coils with differing resonant peaks, you'll be in the ballpark, granted you use a magnet that plays well with it.

Re: Fender "Wide Range" Humbucker for Telecaster

If you really want that tone, try an old one off ebay?

Re: Fender "Wide Range" Humbucker for Telecaster

If you check an exploded diagram of a Fender Wide Range humbucker, it will be apparent that the coils are symmetrical. It is the arrangement of stud and screw polepieces that is not.

Re: Fender "Wide Range" Humbucker for Telecaster

I've rewound the reissues. Kind of an odd configuration. The poles are far from the bar magnet so the geometry is a little "off" even when compared to a standard 'bucker. The covers are thick too.

Re: Fender "Wide Range" Humbucker for Telecaster

I thought SD made a replica or copy of this pickup, but when I looked at the page it specifically says "This pickup is not a direct replacement for the Fender® "wide-range" pickup." Guess that shoots my theory down.

Sorry, I'm no help.

Edit....Thought. Would SD perhaps consider winding one as close to the original specs as possible, in the Custom Shop?

Yeah. I thought Seymour had made a version of the "Wide Range Tele" also.

Contcat Seymour Duncan and speak to someone that can give you thet answer.

Rio Grande makes a replacement without covers on it. If it's anything like their Tallboy 'bucker, it should be nice and snappy.

What does Fender know about W I D E range ?

That thing should definitely be slanted the other way.
