Fender Classic Series '72 Telecaster Thinline {natural} Replacement Pickups?
Seymour Duncan has replied back saying the custom shop can recreate the original Fender Humbucker with the CuNiFe Magnet.

Re: Fender "Wide Range" Humbucker

AFAIK, the Lollars don't use CuNiFe mags though. It's as close as it comes considering the rarity and expense of finding CuNiFe blanks to make screws into. I assume with SD's larger budget and buying power, they probably could do it cheaper and easier than Jason can.

Plus there's the idea of spending $400 on pickups for a $700 guitar...

I stand corrected!

Thanks for that...very interesting!

All that info said, I will add the following...after hearing the Lollars I doubt anyone would be unhappy with them and in most situations most folks would hear little to no difference...just my 2 cents.

Re: Fender "Wide Range" Humbucker

This is an interesting thread. Please post back if you get some more information regarding the CuNiFe magnets/pickups.

According to Lollar he is not using the original CuNiFe material for the pickups but is using Alnico 5.

Quote from the TPDRI thread regarding his pickups - dated August 5, 2010.

I hope this isnt considered spam to answer a direct question as I have been a member here for probably close to 10 years.
The new pickup uses an alnico 5 rod- non threaded for the poles you cant see and it uses threaded magnets on the adjustable poles. Its a type of material they harden after they machine it and it has alot of properties alnico 5 exibits.
I found after a few years of frustration over cunife and having people request this pickup over and over that with some experimenting alnico 5 has alot of the tone qualities cunife has as far as how the bass responds- its tighter and punchier than al 2 but al 5 has a little more magnetic strength than cunife so I use a little shorter magnet than usual- length in alnico is directly related to strength, not quite as short as telenator mentions somewhere but thats why i used a shorter magnet.
I build the proper size bobbins in house- i had covers and baseplates made for me to my spec, the lead wire and coil wire are made for me to spec. These are better made than the originals and will be far easier to service 50 years down the road if they ever do need it. Thats one thing I learned off Leo- make it easy to service!!!
They sound really good clean or dirty and have an almost single coil like attack.
I am happy to be able to offer these as a complete pickup ready to install with mounting screws and springs included- I didnt overlook anything.

Re: Fender "Wide Range" Humbucker

Thanks for the mention Steve (LonePhantom) - Thought I'd highjack the thread and just mention that my Wide Range Humbucker replacements have just been reviewed in this month's issue of Total Guitar Magazine, getting 5 Stars & Best Buy.

Nice range of pups, Welcome to the forum.:14:

Re: Fender "Wide Range" Humbucker

I remember we didn't think the Fenders were very good when they came out: the joke was: "Wide Range all right, from crappy to crappier"...I'm just sayin"...JIMO

Re: Fender "Wide Range" Humbucker

I do love them Jimo. I think people expected them to have a humbucker tone but they're completely different, more like a 'doubled-up' tele pickup. Its the design of individual threaded poles plus the ferrous internal plate. Recreating them became a bit of an obsession ;-)

Thanks, I've been pretty slow in getting involved in the forums - plus I'm conscious this is Seymour's forum and don't want to disrespect by storming in with my own pickups etc - Wide Range Hums have been a bit of an obsession with me though hence my reply above.

Re: Fender "Wide Range" Humbucker

So I see a lot of clones these days that getting a lot of love but so far no CuNiFe magnets...

Any word from the SD Custom Shop if they are using real deal CuNiFe magnets or not?

Re: Fender "Wide Range" Humbucker

I would be really interested in this if seymour actually does use the CuNiFe Mags as I have 72 ri and have been dying to get some vintage pick ups in it. anyone know a price range on these?

Re: Fender "Wide Range" Humbucker

Hi guys, I'm Telenator and yes, we are the only company in the world making a truly vintage correct Wide Range Humbucker with threaded CuNiFe magnets.

The other companies offering WRHB repros are using FeCrCo magnets, or a combination of FeCrCo and AlNiCo.

Telenator is the only company using 100% CuNiFe in the Limited Edition Wide Range Humbucker, and 100% AlNiCo 5 in the "MOD2" WRHB.

The offerings by other companies are good pickups. No one however, captures the vintage tone like Telenator. There are sound clips all over the net. You decide.

Feel free to e-mail us at telenator@earthlink.net if anyone would like to discuss this further as do not wish to spam up this board. I think it's OK to discuss the WRHB here because this pickup is very unique and as far as I'm aware, Seymour does not offer one.

Re: Fender "Wide Range" Humbucker

Thanks for popping in, had no idea that was you! I've seen your posts here before!

Anyway, Seymour does offer a WRHB as a drop in replacement but I'm not sure what the specs are, thats one thing I'd like to find out!

I always wanted a guitar with WRHB's but the new ones just sound so bad I never bothered...the old ones are out there but the CBS "quality" mixed with the new "vintage" pricing turns me off form a real one.
