Fender with the best overdrive?

Re: Fender with the best overdrive?

The best I've ever played was a 63' Blonde Bassman w/t 6G6-B circuit.:smokin:

Re: Fender with the best overdrive?

Anything point to point and tweed gets my vote, but if you want the best highgain out of a Fender amp, it's every amp in the Pro Tube Series, like the newer Concert Reverb, Twin, Pro, and now the Supersonic.

Re: Fender with the best overdrive?

Most of the old ones will work if they are properly fed. Think about that nasty, ugly distortion that Neil Young gets........50's Deluxe. Blackface Deluxe will get up and boogie too. Pete Townshend recorded most of Quadrophenia and Who's Next with a Tweed Bandmaster. And contrary to popular belief, Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols recorded "Never Mind the Bollocks" with a Twin loaded with Gauss speakers that he stole from a Bob Marley show.:laugh2: Can't get much more overdriven than that without some kind of pedal. And most of Derek and the Dominoes "Layla" record was allegedly recorded using two Blackface Champs:fingersx:

YUP.:smokin: There are some conflicting reports. I've read that Eric used a tweed Champ & Duane used a BF Princeton. Either way? They got some righteous tone.:D

Re: Fender with the best overdrive?

I like old Bassman's (tweed or RI) and Super Reverbs.
Deluxe's are great with pedals, but I do not care for their natural overdrive.

I have never cranked a twin enough to comment, but that BB King fellow sure makes 'em work.

Re: Fender with the best overdrive?

The tweed and brown Bandmasters are great amps for Fender dirt...the tweed and brown Deluxes for a more compressed flavor...with a few tweaks, the smaller 35 watt BF/SF amps (Pro/Bandmaster/Tremolux/Vibrolux) are capable of some righteous tuff gnarl.

Any tweed...I prefer the smaller ones for OD tones. My Super is quite amazing, a late 50's Deluxe is great too.

What he said!! There ain't nothing like a nice Tweed pumping out the volume! I get chills from Christians Super and my Celtic Deluxe that Scott built!!!

Re: Fender with the best overdrive?

I'm in love with the sound of a Deluxe Reverb cranked to about 7 - 8. It just sounds heavenly to me with a Les Paul with vintage-voiced pickups.

I bought my Deluxe Reverb Reissue with a 64' Jensen and NOS tubes at a guitar show when I knew I wanted a tube amp, but hadn't done much research on what sound I was going for. I spent a month not really warming up to the amp until I just decided to crank it and see what it would do.

After I cleaned out my shorts I was plenty warmed up to it!

Word.

The best overdrive i ever heard coming out of a Vintage Fender was a '66 Deluxe Reverb with NOS GE tubes and an old Vintage 30 in it (the original speaker had been destroyed)... smooth, warm, buttery, crunchy, snarly, GREAT stuff!

Stumbled onto both deals.....I'll keep ya' posted

Re: Fender with the best overdrive?

The overdrive sound I got from the '59 Bassman LTD reissue was AMAZING! I was having so much fun playing it loud and overdriven I couldn't hear the GC employees yelling at me to turn it down :laugh2:

Tweed Fenders give amazing overdriven sounds, as do some Blackface Fenders like the Bassman, Bandmaster, and Deluxe Reverb.

Re: Fender with the best overdrive?

Tweeds (Deluxe especially) for 1 channel.
Pro Tube Pro Reverb for the 2 channel
Prosonic for 2 channel
Supersonic appears to be getting some positive press

Re: Fender with the best overdrive?

Hey Puck...did you scoreone of the Pro's that was on Ebay over the weekend? TFor some reason, there were some ok deals on blackface amps the last coupleof weeks on Ebay. Saw a real nice 65 Deluxe go for $1500 the other day Buy It Now. Not great, but not bad. Also saw a 68 drip edge Twin gopt for under $1100.

Re: Fender with the best overdrive?

The Fender Super Champ. While not exactly a "vintage" amp, this Paul Rivera design has a lot going for it.

Another Rivera designed amp, the Fender 75 also had a great overdrive tone. It had a LEAD Channel, but the best sounds came from the clean channel, LOW POWER setting, and the amp run loud. Great Tone!

The new Super Sonic has the best Fender Lead tone I've ever heard from one of their amps. I still like my Mesa amps better, but the new Fender ain't too bad.
