Fender YJM Model-what Seymour Pups?

Guys...need some help!

Well, that got me to GAS again for my YJM signature strat that is sold in '98. I've decided that I'm going to buy another one...it will be sonic blue with maple fretboard. My problem? I HATE the DiMarzio pickups that come in the axe. So, I'm putting the electronics together as we speak and I'd like to have some opinions on some Duncans to go in the guitar. I play mostly rock/metal (believe it or not, NOT much Malmsteen). I think that the guitar is only routed for S-S-S, so I'm stuck with either singles, stacks, or the 'lil series.

I was thinking about a mint green guard with some antiquitys...or maybe 'the opposite' and a triple hot rails guitar...I'm leaning toward the antiquitys though, because I like a lot of versatility. BTW...if you've never played one of the scalloped necks...wow! :32:

Thanks y'all!

the Ants are it man. They sound good in ANY guitar.

That's what I've heard from others. My concern is that I do kick up the gain, pretty often at that. I wonder if the ants would retain their chunk with that much gain or if the HR would be a better option? In my opinion, the HR don't sound that great clean, and I'll be using this guitar for everything from rock to really clean country stuff. I may just have to haul around a couple of guitars and forget about the workhorse stuff with the YJM...my 70's strats will do super clean easily. In fact, based on the reports I've been hearing, I may switch the pups in my 70's strats out to the antiquitys.

I even thought about EMG's, for about a second. EMG's are nice and quiet and versatile...too bad they sound generic to me. :smack:

Thanks Beandip

i got the answer to all those problems with one pickups set the kinman avn-woodstock plus set. There completly silent no matter how much gain and have a pretty hot bridge pickup that will give you alot to work with it, and the greatest thing is there the opposite of sterile.

Re: Fender YJM Model-what Seymour Pups?

Great news! I just picked up a sonic blue YJM American strat body off of E-bay for $295...it looks very clean! It also has the 6 bolt trem holes...I much prefer the 6 screw trem. Maybe I'll go with gold?

So now, I have a second strat to work with...maybe I'll set this one up for metal?

Muhahahahahahah!

Kinmans? Hmm...never tried those...I'll check 'em out.

I tried those Kinmans, and although they're quite, they're nothing like Ants. Plus, if you do the shielding from guitarnuts.com, then you've nothing to worry about. I've yet to play a better sounding pickup than the Ant Texas Hot (besides my vintage Fenders)

Beandip, what years are your Fenders from?

I have 7-8 70's stock pickups...mine are terrible sounding, hehehehe! But I think I got a bad batch...a couple of them sound great. In particular, my ones dated from '74.

My uncles late 60's tele's pickups are incredibly sweet, though. :32:

I've already got the white vintage pickguard from Warmoth, wired up and ready to go...it's even got the 'countersunk' SRV type screw holes...perfect! I may pull my '62 RI mint pickguard out, though, b/c if I do get ants, they come with aged covers...right?

yeah, the Ants come with aged covers. My pickups are 12-2-72, and I just found out they're some of the first pickups Fender made with the flat poles. They all run around 5.5k. And I was just kidding about the sound of 'em, they're awsome, but not as good as the Ants. And if you pull your mint pg, send it to me, I need a new one, mine warped.

Wow, those are early. Usually if you ask, you'll have a lot of people telling you that the majority of change happened in late '74, with most (if not all) pups in '75 being flat poled. I don't claim to know for sure, as I wasn't there. My '74's are flat poles. They're pretty cool, and way better than anything in American Standards, IMHO. The new American series pickups though...they're quite good.

You want my mint pickguard? :laugh2:

I think I'm going to sell all my extra pickups on e-bay, maybe as one big sale...

Texas specials-set of 3
Fat 50's-set of three
Rio Grande tall boys with pearl tops-set of 3

What do you think I should ask for 'em?

I think you should send 'em to me. :D. I've got a mic and an amp to give ya for 'em. And the funny thing is, I've wanted those three sets for quite a while now (well, w/o the pearl tops), just do me a favor man, whatever you do, dont get the Kinmans. If you want quiet, shield your strat. IMO those are some of the worse pickups ever.

Worst pickups ever? Wow...you must really dislike those :)

I think the pup's are gonna have to be sold to pay for the extra pieces of the YJM strat...like trem, tuning machines...etc. I try not to sink way more $ into equipment than I already have!

That's why I'm gonna have a BIG sale...I'm gonna move pickups, amps. Nearly everything I have I'm gonna sell, now that I know what I want. I think I'm keeping my 2002 ash strat...the '75 and '76 strats are going as is the Wolfgang (unless I can't get much for it). Marshall...going... You get the picture! :burnout:

You'll get no argument from me on the Antiquitys...I think they're among the very finest Strat pickups I've ever owned, new or vintage.

I like both versions: the Ant Tex Hots for thier strong mids and soulful vintage tone and the Ant II's for thier deep, bouncey bass and springy, lively highs.

And I like the mint green pickguards too...that's what's on my white Strat.

The parchment colored Antiquity pickup covers look very nice with the mint pickguard and parchment colored covers, knobs and switch tip.

Are you talking about the aged ones or the 'parchment' ones that Fender is makine now?

Do the ants come with recessed-type screws or are they flat bottomed screws?

BTW, I read your review of the Ant II's. Sounded as if you like them :)

I'm not sure what the pickups will be just yet...I was even considering some QP's for some higher powered single coil tone...but do you think that they're too much for very clean tones?

Not if you have a solid state amp, with those things its like "headroom? I got your headroom right heeeeeere" <-- brooklyn accent. I still say the Ants man.
