Fender's New Upgraded Highway one guitars!!

Re: Fender's New Upgraded Highway one guitars!!

Played an '06 HWY1 today through my will-be new amp. Amazing for the price. Really pleasantly surprised.

And amen to Scott on the old finishes; a guy I know has one...only had it for maybe a year and a half and it's beat to crap! He's an easy going fella too....

It's a shame I'm one of those guys who likes to keep it all in top condition. I hate to see dings, scatches, smudges, fingerprints and all. It can't really afford the USA models either. Highway 1s did seem ideal at one point. It's down to the individual axe I guess. I'm content with my MIM for now to be honest.

I need to play more Highway 1s though. I haven't played that many, and haven't really noticed the tonal difference that the thin finish creates.

Re: Fender's New Upgraded Highway one guitars!!

I was always annoyed on some of the Highway 1s when you could see the different shades of wood showing through the finish from the different pieces in the body. Wonder if these new ones will look a little more uniform??

Re: Fender's New Upgraded Highway one guitars!!

If i go for a stratty/tele-ish guitar next as opposed to the mahog/maple + 24.75" type guitar my Dean is, i would consider these. Sound brilliant if you want to upgrade to any specific hardware that USA Fender dont come with. Question: Is it easy to convert a vintage 6-screw vibrato to a 2-point vibrato?

I kinda want a self-relic finish...is the Nitro finish thicker then the Satan laquer?

for the most part, yes. If you understand how to drill finishes and wood, and how to install the bridge in the first place, you should come out alright.

Re: Fender's New Upgraded Highway one guitars!!

I have been without GAS for a long time, until now. If i had the money I'd wanna snap up a good deal on a fat strat and upgrade to top notch hardware. Shame im skint!

Dude... seeing as Xssive already made fun of you I'll just say it straight out.

The word is Satin. S-A-T-I-N..

Re: Fender's New Upgraded Highway one guitars!!

I do know this, whatever the finish WAS on those older HWY1's, I saw at least 5 of them with chips in the paint while still hanging on the rack at the guitar stores!! That is pathetic. Why even put a finish on the guitar? Just rub some tung oil on it, or color it with crayons if your gonna be that cheap about it. If Squier guitars can put a good finish on a 99$ guitar why couldn't Fender on a 600$ version?

I can't really remember looking, but I remember fender advertised it as having a "Vintage neck joint" Does that refer to the old 3 neck-screw models??

If so, has this been remedied??

if you're calling a satin laquer finish cheap, and a thick ass catalyst polyester finish that Fender and Squier use a "good" finish, you've got something mixed up. You wanna talk about cheap? It cost Fender probably 30 dollars to spray the finish on the HWY 1's, and probably 3 dollars for the finish on the the Fender's and Squiers you're referring to. And yes, it is referring to the 3 bolt pattern, and some people thought they had a problem, some people didnt. But yes, they have a vintage style with modern appointments.

Re: Fender's New Upgraded Highway one guitars!!

Personally I would rather have a "cheap" finish that stays on than a laquer finish that is half gone in a couple of months. Its no coincidence that I saw so many of these with chips while still on the sell rack. These models were notorious for the paint chiping off, just read the reviews on harmony central. I have never really heard anyone that seriously knows guitars say that the three bolt neck CBS introduced to save 2cents was anything except a very bad design flaw. It couldn't help the wood/wood connection and it cannot be as stable as a four bolt. These guitars have several good things going for them: American alder bodies, american necks with 22 frets, I like the extra mass of the 70's peghead, and the alnico 3 pickups sound like an improvement. I won't say that there arent a few things about the HWY 1's that are not ideal though, thats why we will still pay much more for an american strat. All of those "special" appointments that fender has "added" are just marketing gimmicks to draw your attention away from the fact that a 300$ less guitar..... is 300$ less guitar. (Satin finish = we did not take time to polish the finish. Vintage neck pocket = we saved two cents on a screw). All these things are ok since they save us money (Gibson is doing it too) and we still end up with a very playable guitar which is what really matters. SRV's number 1 didn't have a finish left on it and we would all give our left nut to own that one. :)
