Fernandes Vortex Deluxe + SD Black Winters = Feedback, need advice

Heya,

I have a Fernandes Vortex Deluxe guitar. It's a neckthrough, all mahogany affair. It's fitted with a balanced set of Black Winters. The tone and volume potentiometers are taken out. The guitar is very microphonic/prone to feedback. Muting the strings with my hands doesn't stop it. Does anyone have any advice for this?

Best regards,

Jacob

Welcome to the forum.

To clarify, are you saying that you have replaced the stock EMG 25k pots with 500k ones or that you have dispensed with control pots completely?

Also, how do you set the controls of your amplification and/or distortion pedals?

Finally, how much of a string angle have you set over the bridge saddles, towards the tailpiece?

I have dispensed with control pots completely. They are physically still present in the guitars, but NOT wired up.

I'm using a Kemper Profiler loaded with some high-gain profiles. It's throttled up hard. EQs are neutral. No boost pedals or distortion pedals. In fact...No pedals of any kind on the profile I'm using, and no physical pedals in my signal chain, except a Polytuner acting as on/off switch for the signal.

Finally, how much of a string angle have you set over the bridge saddles, towards the tailpiece?

160 or 150 degrees, eyeballing it.

Stop facing the amp and back the gain down a bit? JK... sorta...

The kemper has a noise gate built in, If you are getting uncontrolled squealing that isnt from the strings ringing try tightening it down.

Re: Fernandes Vortex Deluxe + SD Black Winters = Feedback, need advice

I've been running a topic on the Kemper forums for quite while. At first we took the gain down. In order to stop the sqealing I had to turn it all the way down to crunch-rock levels. That isn't very inspiring for death metal. I turned up the noisegate as much as it would go. It got a lot better, but the guitar still wouldn't stop sqealing. I've tried everything I can on the amp side, with no succes. My Ibanez RG2550 Prestige does not feedback or sqeal at all. Even when the Kemper is pushed hard, both gain-wise and volume-wise.

Even if something is FUBARD in the pickup i cant imagine that its squealing through the noise gate. Does it squeal through both pickups or does it change when you swap pickups?

I'm not sure. I think it squeals through both. I'll check that out on Wednesday.

Re: Fernandes Vortex Deluxe + SD Black Winters = Feedback, need advice

Sorry for the late reply. I've been testing both guitars now. The problem is with the Fernandes only. My Ibanez is as silent as the grave whenever I want it to shut up.

Are the Black Winters wax-potted?

Yes they are wax potted.... Try connecting at least a proper 500k volume pot to the black winters. Few pickups sound better when ran just straight to the jack.

Lower the pickups.

Run a ground wire to the bridge. Guitars that come stock with EMGs often don't have one.

Re: Fernandes Vortex Deluxe + SD Black Winters = Feedback, need advice

Another weird thing that I have encountered, not with black winters, and I do not understand this, but try a buffered pedal bypassed in between the output of the guitar and the input of the amp. I have had a squeal on a particular amp that has to be impedance related. A buffer makes it go away. So if that is the case, it might be that your kemper is expecting the pots to be in there. Just a thought, and if you have a spare cable and a buffered pedal, takes five minutes and is free. My 11rack needed settings changed to let my guitar with 1meg pots to not squeal.

Re: Fernandes Vortex Deluxe + SD Black Winters = Feedback, need advice

Question....do both pickups on the Vortex exhibit this problem?

You may be experiencing a phenomenon known as TOO MUCH METAL! :headbang:
