Ferris Wheel demo

Re: Ferris Wheel demo

That was fantastic. For me, it had the most important element--it was fun to listen to. Really enjoyable, thanks for doing that.

Re: Ferris Wheel demo

Thanks again guys.

I know the bass is out there a bit and I could have EQed it better but all those tracks are going into the garbage. This was just my working copy.

I wrote that piece over the course of maybe two weeks. I had the head and break with a different 2nd section (open 6ths pull offs) and it just sat for a week as I tried to figure what what to do with it. The uli-land (where is that?) section I wrote ove the course of four days and the **** thing would wake me up at 430am and call me to record. I'd record a small piece of it and then it would bounce around on my head all day and I'd drop a little more after work and then some more in the evening. I'm not exactly sure where it came from but it was seriously a lot of fun to write.

The problem is though, that once I was done writing it I didn't know how to play it. I literally had to go back and learn how to play both guitar parts end to end and I even tabbed out the 2nd guitar part for another guitar playing friend of mine that I wrote the song for in the first place.

MikeS was right, it is a guitar players song. I have a friend named Carl that is a killer player and he is also a huge satch/via/timmons instrumental fan and we decided to work on some things together. I set out to write a song that would be challenging for the both of us with as many different techniques thrown in as possible.

This is the mess that I came up with. Just as I had my part down cold and worked up the hand strength to play what is essentially a 4 minute solo I sliced my left index finger with a utility knife cutting down some drywall at work. Needless to say, it'll take a couple extra days to keep my finger from squirting juice during the numerous 1st finger bends that are in the **** thing but I'm almost there. The finger is still a little tender but its closing up nicely.

The cool thing about this song is that there are no actual chords played. Even the first 7 bars where there are four notes played are actually open 6th intervals played by both guitars to outliine a chord. All the rest of the harmonic structure is implied.

Again, I don't know where it came from but it's a lot of fun to play and that was the whole point. Now I have to re-do the drums so that it compliments some of the rhythmic stuff implied in the guitar and bass lines and I have to re-do the bass line to sinc up with the guitar work a little better.

Lots of work left to do to get it ready for June.
My old friend and roomie Carl V! I sat around and played a lot of guitar with Carl in the early/mid '80s. He is a killer player indeed!

Carl told me about this piece and tried to play it over the phone for me, but my little cell phone speaker couldn't cut it. I'm glad I finally got to hear it.

Good job!

Re: Ferris Wheel demo

Thanks Frank, cool to hear from you after hearing about you for the last 20 years! Carl has some great things to say about you as a player and a person and coming from Carl that means a lot. He expressed some interest in driving out to your parts this fall and hanging out to catch some shows or something. If the money is right it just might happen. Road trips with Carl are a blast and I'm always up for hanging out with fellow players and stealing a lick or two!

Way too cool to hear from you Frank!

Re: Ferris Wheel demo

Yep, everything is groovy!

Just hooked up with a drummer that sobered up awhile back but my bass player is now out over too much alcohol use. I swear to all that is holy that I'll floor a complete band again one day. At least I finally found a guitar player to work with that isn't into drinking and he actually does a fine job of keeping up with me so I am still having fun with it. I think I'm going to play bass for the purposes of writing and recording until I find a solid bass player and then I can fall back to guitar and keys as well now that I have a guitar player that has the chops to carry a show.

I really am trying to put together a project that is worth doing for me musically. I have done the cover band thing on and off for years but it really isn't that satisfying for me anymore. Three sets a night for people that could care less, playing other peoples stuff, dealing with bar owners and all the rest of it just isn't doing it for me anymore. I'd rather put together a dozen slammin originals and play a single set for free to people that want to hear music.

Ferris wheel is turning out to be rather difficult to track as tight as I want it but it's coming together nicely with the addition of another guitar player. I think we'll probably just tighten up the demo some more and then re-record the whole thing over again once I can track live drums.

Thanks for chiming in Bro!

Follow your muse, it'll serve you well. You always put together excellent songs with great musicianship, don't make apologies for doing what you excel at and makes you happy.
