Figure this one out...

last friday i was just practicing by myself with my regular gear, and i could not get any tone at all that i was happy with. i spent most of my pratice time fiddling with knobs and switching pedals in the chain and tweaking eq's. finally i got frustrated and went home.
Today i start messing arround, not really practicing anything and i swear my whole set up sounded sweet. i was busting out lead lines and some sweet chord progressions. and i didn't touch a thing! weird

You were on the forum last weekend werent you? That explains it all!

I find after a while for me I can tweak and tweak and can't get anything, your ears almost seem to become immune to a good setting after lots of tweaking

And then you leave it for a few days and viola, tone heaven once again.

Re: Figure this one out...

Many of us have noticed things like this. How your sound seems to change on its own. A buddy of mine said it could be due to changes in humidity.

LOL. of course! this forum is the cure for tone problems. nah, i was busy all weekend with family stuff and i didn't get to play until today.

could be it was starting to rain on friday and apparently we had a thunderstorm...that i somehow missed. i heard somewhere that Billy Gibbons won't record anything if the barometric pressure drops or rises beyond a certain point (correct me if i'm misquoting)

Re: Figure this one out...

the amount of power your amp and pedals are recieving may not be optimal and your stuff isn't getting enough voltage, or somesuch. a power conditioner may help with that.

Re: Figure this one out...

whoa serious deja vu. didnt you have a thread JUST like this like a year ago? i think it involved rain as well

back when i was rocking a valve jr me and the dudes were having an epic jam session in a non air conditioned garage. it was really freaking hot and humid. eventually, i swear, my tone sounded so **** amazing. i dunno if the speaker absorbed some moisture or what. naturally, none of the other guys said they heard anything different

non guitarists.....pfft

Re: Figure this one out...

Ear fatigue and changes in the inner ear coupled with the various atmospheric changes all impact the perception of what we hear. Like any sense we never experience the same thing anyone else does exactly, nor exactly the same ourselves each time.

that was deep

Re: Figure this one out...

^^ there´s that, and there´s also the fact that environment temperature affects the flow of electrictiy, as a rule electricity encounters lower resistance in a material that is colder. The tonal changes are more apparent on tube amps then solid state models, and many top level pros actually have their techs rebias their amps every gig to make sure the tubes are running at the optimal temperature.

This is one of the reasons the new H&K Switchblade has been getting stellar reviews, the automatic biasing system, because it helps to minimize the effect of the environment on the tone ;)
