Filing down my nut.

I have a Samick SG, and the grooves in the nut where the strings rest are relatively high, so no matter how low my bridge goes down, the action's still not that low (especially on the low frets). I want to get the grooves lowered, is this something that's as simple as it seems, and all I need to do is get something rough and file them down, or is there more to it than that?

Re: Filing down my nut.

I'm guessing you don't have a set of nut files? If not, it's going to be harder to file it down cleanly, so that the strings don't bind and the slots aren't too wide. You're better off taking it to a tech, something simple like this should be very inexpensive. If you do it yourself and screw up, you're going to have to pay for a new nut and installation.

It's critical you get this exactly right or you'll have uneven string heights and if you get it wrong you'll get fret buzz. Either leave it - or get someone else to look at it.
